I was looking over the 74 owners manual and happened to see something I had never seen in a bus in real life. Look at the center and right pics. Does anyone have that heat pipe in their bus??
I always see the spring loaded flap in the floor, just never saw the pipe that goes in it. And here I thought the end cover for the middle seat was rare.......
What, you never heard of the end cover? If you read the section above the middle pic in the above link, it says to 'remove the side and front trimming'. I believe there was early and late end timming and it depended on the year of the full seat. As far as I can tell, the early full seat end cover had 3 clips holding it on. The late full seat had 2 clips. But I cannot confirm that or if early and late was 72/73 when headrests came out. My early parts book shows 3 clip, the later ETKA shows 2 clips, as does the pic in the link below. Early LHD, right cargo door trim was part number 221 883 891B with either trim code 043 for grey black or 86X for brown. 043 on the 891B was from 8/67 up to I am not sure when. The 86X brown was from 8/67 to 7/70. The pic of the one I have handy [I have both the 2 clip and the 3 clip] has part number 221 883 892 043 on it. Whether that is the real part number or not I don't know. 892 on the part may mean 891B on the bag when you ordered it. 891B may be the 3 clip one and 892 may be the 2 clip one. Here is the 2 clip one, # 31:

Unfortunately, when ETKA says a part is NLA, the part number vaporizes.

Hiya Karl,
I have the underseat end trim installed in my Bus (a 1970 7-passenger walk through). Would it help you to have the VW parts number from that end-trim? I think it is stamped on the back, IIRC.

One of those heat ducts that fits in the hole under the middle seat came with my '78. Waiting till I get my heat working better (and for winter to hit) to see if the thing actually works. _________________ '71 bug, answers to "Clementine"

Having a westy and a double cab, I'm of no help. I remember seeing those pics and thinking that they looked really cool.

I'm new here. I just bought a 73 from the original owner. It has all of it's stock parts as far as I can tell. The owner was 91 when he died last Jan. I bought the bus from his widow, she is 87. It has the end cover for the middle seat and it has the heat duct that you pictured. This bus is all stock with 72,000 miles. It has not been driven in 6 years untill yesterday. |

I also have the end cover and heat pipe. The heat pipe seems to do its job well of directing warm air flow, and I notice immediately if the end cover has been bumped off the seat rail by one of the kids--the view from the sliding door is much nicer with the end cover in place. _________________ 1978 7-Passenger, 37K miles

Can you post the part number and possibly a photo? _________________ No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always a boom tomorrow. |

Huh - learn something new every day. I remember that hole in the floor in my first bus. Figured it was for something with the heat, but then again, the main heater pipe was also missing. I remember thinking it was odd to have a hole in the floor like that, but never really thought any more about it. That vent makes perfect sense, though.
