Well, it took 2 years to get to this point, but I finally applied paint. I wasn't working on the buggy body for 2 years, it was just being able to devout time to the painting project. But, in the last 2 years, I've upgraded the steering from top to bottom, installed new clutch and gas cables, caught up on maintenance and spent time reading this forum and books on everything VW!
But, I finally squeezed in time to prep and paint. I sanded the old, peeling finish off, applied two coats of SEM high build primer, in white. Then three coats of Lil Daddy Roth Tropi Cali baae coat, then sprayed on Tropi Cali dry Monster Flake mixed with some Agent Orange Trippin Flake. Then I sprayed on one coat of 2K clear high gloss, and then sprayed some more dry metal flake and then two more coats of clear.
In about 10 days or so, I'll sand with 2000 grit and then spray on two more clear coats.
The worst is behind me! The pics show what I started with and what it looks like now.

Looking just fine!
Thank you for not painting it blue! Everyone seems to want to paint them blue. In my opinion there is nothing more mundane and boring than blue. Ok maybe gray is... All fine if you want to hide it in a parking lot and search for hours for it.
No these cars are special and deserve nice standout colors! Good work! _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

Love the wide chromies with moon caps! You'll stand out in traffic and be safer on the road with that combo... |

I'm hoping the bright color will help during the day, and at night this should help:

Thanks! I really wanted a 70's vibe color with metal flake. I never painted with metal flake or 2K clear, so it was a learning ecperience. It was stressful, but came out great.
I hope the bright color makes people smile and inspires others to look at classic VW's and buggys instead of Chevys and Fords etc. _________________ 1966 Manx clone (possibly a Joe Poty Enterprises) named SANDY. '70 to '73 1300 cc w/1600 DP heads, twin carbs and headers |
