Hello friends. I have been driving air-cooled VW for over 35 years but I might take a jump into the type 3 realm. I recently found a well-worn but very intact and original 1973 Squareback in very dry parts of California. It is manual and has very little rust. The 3 hours of research I have done has left me with more questions than answers. I am big on stock but it seams that many of the OEM parts for the nice fuel injection system on a ’73 might be an issue over time. The car runs and drive well but maintaining such a car might be slightly more than I can handle. I seem to find no microfiche for a 1973 VW type 3 or any extensive complete parts list. ISP looks to be great but it seems that at some point, not being rich, I might need to convert to dual carbs. Does such a parts manual and list even exist or am I once again swimming at the deep end of the pool? Any pointers would be great. Thanks

Hey Jeff! I love that yellow...and a sunroof?! Looks like a great start if you want to jump into the Type 3 world. '73 is the last year, and it has some weird parts that will be hard to find if needed, but not impossible. Don't let the fuel injection scare you. Most of the time it can be tinkered with, and there are some great threads here in this forum to help if you want to keep it fuel infected (hehe). If you do need to switch to carbs, that is not a big deal and you won't get flack for it. Just keep all of the F.I. components that you remove.
Here is a parts list hosted on TheSamba: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/type3_parts_book/
You can find these in book form for about $200-$250.
Type 3s are great and it will be a big difference from your DC that you daily and your Thing. They drive like real cars. Keep us posted! _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

You might want to get a Brown Bentley too, as it'll cover most everything you'll need to know about the car. As for the FI system, Ray can help you get thru that. Most of us "late" owners have gone to the 86-90 Ford Ranger frame rail mounted fuel pump (Airtex # E2000, available from the Zone). There's also the E16020 Precision pump from O'Reilly's that works too (cheaper than the Bosch pump). Ray has a full page list of pumps as well. Also Jim Adney offers rebuilding services for our cars like caliper and master cylinder rebuilding, along with a fuel tank vent kit. Unfortunately a 73 is the last of the model series, and it's parts list was only available in microfiche. The parts books end in early 72 for our cars, but 73's used some of the same parts. Things to keep in mind are brake rotors and calipers, as they got larger (shared with the 411-412) starting in 72. The rear drums and assemblies are the same from 66 thru 73, so they're easier to find parts for. There are other minor changes for the 73 cars, but those are the ones I really know about. I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Please introduce me to Ray. Maybe he can enlighten me on my system. How can I contact him?
Like my Next mystery is the fuel injector trigger contact, might be 311 908 301, but I am not sure. Going to be a fun journey of discovery on this beast. Hope I can keep it stock for a long time with all your help.

You should also mention when he has time to post. He'll stop by here once in a while too, but he's mostly active in the type 4um (411-412 forum). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Greetings type-3-lings!
Yes, I look in here almost every day. I only really postwhen I have something to add.
Agree. If its complete or missing very little, keep the fuel injection. To start, take some well lit pictures of everything under your hood so we can see what you have...what system you have and what is missing.
If you have any problems finding something just ak here in your thread. Lots of smart people with parts in this forum. Ray |
