Buddy Hale. Yes, beautiful craftsmanship by all involved.
Guess we are in the wrong forum though… |

Yes, nicely done indeed...but it's still 1930s technology at heart. For that price, you can still find an early driver-quality Porsche 911 that was designed from the ground up as a car that goes, stops and handles as a true sports car should. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

1960s technology.
For that price you can buy a new C8 and have plenty of gas money left. _________________ Glenn

Yes, you're right about an early 911 being '60s tech, but it's still leagues better at most everything right outa the box over a Beetle...even a modified one.
Totally agree that a C8 is one of the best bangs-for-a-buck out there. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

Also a SWB early 911 for $90k is nowhere in the condition of that Beetle. You'd be in the $200K+ range for a really nice early 911 in that condition.
The 1973 911S in Top Gum Maverick is owned by the Peterson Museum and worth $230k. Jennifer Connelly is not included.

The early SWB cars are especially desirable (read 'expensive') due to their rarity, but it's still entirely possible to find nice, driver-quality '69-'73 cars for well under $100K.
This '70 911 Targa recently sold on BaT for $51.5K.
And this '69 Coupe went for $60K this past August.

A '73 911S is a highly-desirable prize in the Porsche world and much sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Cars with the right provenance can easily top $200K, but lesser models are still available at somewhat 'reasonable' prices. They may not be as pristine as that Beetle, but you're still getting a very usable car with a true sports car pedigree instead of a grossly over-powered little sedan that'll never perform as well as a 911. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

The difference is these are "drivers" and the Buddy Hale car is a "show" car that can be driven.
My 74 will most likely be just as fast and handle just as well... at 1/3 the price. But then my car is a driver and not built to the super high quality of that car.
That kind of quality and attention to detail is $$$$$ and not everyone can do it.
Also Buddy Hale is a well know builder with a solid portfolio of previous cars, having his name attache to that car also makes it worth more.
The people that bid on it are not looking for a driver, they're looking for a one of a kind. It's like buying a Singer built 964 over a 73 911 Targa. _________________ Glenn

OK, I see your point...it's just two different worlds. Some folks are willing & able to spend $90K on a toy they can haul around to car shows, while others would rather spend similar $$$ to experience the sensation of driving an iconic sports car on the open road. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

Some will purchase a $2,000,000 Singer DLS and others will buy a house for themselves, a house for their daughter and one for their son.
Link
Suddenly $90k doesn't sound so much.
Again, if a custom VW is your thing, then this car will scratch your itch.
Two years ago a new customer showed up with Brazilian 23 window. He wanted more power, the bus lowered and disc brakes. $30,000 later he has a new 2110, Airkewld straight axle tranny and Wilwood brakes. At first I though he was nuts since he drove up in a new C8 ZR1. But when he told me he also had a McLaren I was happy to do what he wanted. I bet he'll put less than 1000 miles on it before he gets tired and sells it. _________________ Glenn
