The '78 and '79 models had the sliding windows you seek. Check the classifieds - there are often sets for sale there.

Welcome to the forum, Izzy.

You might be surprised how much air those wing windows will bring in. Try them before you go the the trouble (though it's not that much trouble) of installing sliders. You might also consider the lovered jalousie windows from a camper if you can find them. They allow the most air movement, blocking nothing.

By the way - just a matter of netiquette: When you post in ALL CAPS it is considered the equivalent of shouting, and some folks will find it rude. Silly, I know, but there it is. Keep cool. Cool

Sliders are nice for the volume of air but...... they don't have screens.
Bug city. Camper jalousies have screens.

There were aftermarket slider screens that screwed thru the rubber seals, on the outside. But they are very rare.

I do have a pair and when I have time I will take a pic of them.

I have 6 or 8 pairs of sliders.......

I neglected to mention that ASI Riviera sliders are made in the USA and they have built in screens. Very tough to find.

The screens on the jalousy windows are great. But the window mechanisms are often in disrepair. Also, the owner's manual says don't drive with them open, a warning that is almost universally disregarded and may account for the disrepair. The sliders are reliable and can be left open while driving.

In the southwest, I need the breeze all the time and don't have to worry about insects or rain. So I chose the sliders. In the southeast, it would be hard to camp without the screens, but I've seen home made options for all the doors and windows (usually involving magnets or snaps along with screen from a fabric shop).

I've got a good set of jalousies, with screens, from a parted 69 that I would trade for a good pair of sliders for my 68. If there are any takers, let me know. Cool

Hey Hippo, will those vanagon sliders fit my 78' bay? I might get them for when I do the rubber seals and bodywork on "the turd". At that price I can't go wrong. Mine have bad felt seals and the plastic thingys that they slide on are all ate-up on one side, and I can't find the materials to fix em'. I thought the later ones were different? Am I wrong? Question

Karl sold me a set of real bay window sliders and they're awesome. I gave my jalousie windows to another list member. The mechanisms worked, but I was waiting for a window pane to snap off the jalousie and fly into whoever happened to be behind me if I had them open while driving...

The sliders are great. I love them.

Karl did correct me in the past but just so you can see my sliders in my bay. I love em, especially how quite they are compared to the slats Wink

I'm still unclear if anyone makes a slider (original, aftermarket, or otherwise) for the rearmost side windows. I like the j-windows in the middle, but it sure would be nice to be able to open a slider on the rear passenger side to let the air through while driving (that is, when I get her drivable).

Shark - I can see a 5 to 10 degree difference (cooler, depending on ambient temps) CHT and oil. I know I may have opened pandora's box with my statment but for me (someone who is constantly putting my reactor under load) they work in the Mountains like a champ. the only issue is that they crack. I had to use fiberglass to reinforce the scoops and now its solid.
