Hi folks. Newbie here. Im going to pick up my 73 tonite. Its a bit of a restoration project and is currently missing its drivetrain, but it was cheap and the body is mostly straight and solid so it will make a good starting point.
Im located in Southern NJ, hope to find some other Thing junkies in the area.
If anyone is in the area with some drivetrain leads or knows of a parts car ( I need to cut out some rear fender sections to weld in to patch a bad dent on the passenger side rear ) please feel free to drop me a line at [email protected] |

You can pretty much use all Bug running gear and beam in a thing. Oh yeah, Welcome to the site! _________________ Schrodinger's cat walked into a bar and it didn't.

Yeah, thats pretty much my plan, upon inspection the #$%@ shop that removed the tranny just torched of the frame ends so I will have to find a donor and weld that back in too.
The PO is trying to find me the old tranny from his other car so I can steal the output flanges off it to convert a beetle trans if needed.
Still need to find a back half though, the more I look at it the less I think it will succumb to a big mallet |

Now that is going to be hard to fix. If you can try to get a Thing transaxle as it's geared for the heavy beast.
Once it's running though it will be worth all the effort you put into it. They are a blast to drive! |

Trannies are heavy, so UPS shipping is out. I can ship by greyhound, ABF or Forward Air. $350 including shipping. _________________ OG JHC

How far back did they torch off the frame horns? I have welded some on to replace RUSTED out ones before several times, it was really pretty simple, Take some measurements first...Sawzall some off a donor pan/ old t-bone and then after you mock it backup make sure you have the angle and dimensions to your satifaction them Mig weld them up good.
I tacked them up and bolted the tranny moount cross member in place to get that dimension right and square everything up.
Good Luck! |

Check shipping for the tranny. I got a used Vanagon transmission from Michigan to MD for $150 via truck. I sent the core back via FedEx for about $100. |
