My floor jack needs fluid I think. A guy at work said to use brake fluid. What do you guys think about that?

Brakes are hydrolic... so it sounds like it will work.

Yep, its pretty much doing the same job, and keep it lubbed! Any break fluid will work in it too, don't need anything expensive.

As long as it was empty and you fill it with new brake fluid. Do not mix the fluid especially with something holding a car over your head.

I have heard that brake fluid will damage the seals in the jack. Sears sells jack oil... any parts place should have it too. Permatex makes one, along with most oil manufacturers. You would probably be better off with tranny fluid than brake fluid.

But, if your jack needs fluid you need to find out why... the fluid doesn't just disappear. It may be time for a new jack, or a rebuild.

Jack oil. Went through a lot of that stuff in adolescence.

Brake fluid will not work, I've tried it myself. Also I read brake fluid has alcohols in it that will turn the seals into mush.

Not having any "Jack" fluid I have used gear oil with great success Smile

Livens makes a good point. I was so concerned about how I could explain Jack Oil in the shower (see, hair conditioner belongs in the shower, so no one is none the wiser), I forgot the actual issue. Livens is correct, 90 weight works, brake fluid is too fluid.
