i really need a set of white spokes for my thing. it is on decent original wheels now, (even has all hubcap clips intact), but i would prefer wide five white spokes...know of any available?

bljones, I started writing my 181 life story, in response to your first message, bear with me, the story is long but I needed to tell my story to someone that would appreciate it so I am going to post it, then answer your other questions.

Bljones, now this is the kind of stuff we should be talking about, sometimes it is nice to forget about buying and selling parts and cars, and to not argue about stuff, I like to hear about other peoples projects and experiences. As for my 181, well that is a long story, a year ago almost to the date I was telling my Dad and Uncle about this 73 thing I had been servicing at work, and how much I wanted to get one after driving and working on it.
First I have to tell you about this car, the guy that owned it spared no expense with this car, the first time I seen it I almost pissed my pants, this dude pretty much called the thing shop and ordered everything in the catalogue, he sent the convertible top frame rail to them and had them sandblast it, weld the reinforcement kit on it, powdercoat it, and put a brand new tan colored thing shop top on it, he also sent his seats in and had them mount these leather recline able seats with arm rests, they are the same exact seats that are in my MomĘs Chrysler Town and Country, he said they made only a few sets of those seats because I could not find them on the web site, they are sweet as hell! He got new rear seat backs and bottom pad in matching leather, also he got the cocoa mats, kubel style wood duckboards on top of those, the glove box door with out the radio hole, he had us put the radio in the glove box, he got the thing shop ceramic coated header exhaust that goes thought the bumper and the swing out spare tire carrier. Then he had us build a 1776 with all of the goodies and all new electronics, new brakes and had us re camber the rear end, he also sent the gas heater to Texas or some where to have it rebuilt, when he was done he had over $10,000 bucks into it.
Needless to say I fell in love with it, it was beautiful before he did all that stuff, you could eat dinner off of the battery tray, the car is totally rust free, I wanted to get one but I knew I could never afford to do all of that stuff but I just wanted a decent one, so when I told my Uncle that I wanted one it just so happened that one of his old friends and vw customers called him and told him that he wanted to sell his thing, my Dad and Uncle used to sell him all of his VWS and service them as well, I could remember when he used to come over when I was like 3 years old he always would dress up in safari clothes when he drove it and had one of those funny sounding horns on it, anyway I went over to see it and it was covered up with a ton of shit so I could not see it very good, but the pan was clean and he had a ton of other vw parts and a fresh 1600 sitting on the ground and the car had a running motor as well, he said $3500 for everything, which was a good deal, but when I got it home I noticed that the back seat was sitting funny, so I folded them down to discover that some sick bastard cut a big ass hole between the seats so they could weld a piece of shit homemade solid trans mount made of scrap metal, I was not happy, but it was my own fault for not looking at it better before driving it, but I still put the fresh engine in it and drove it for a month or two , I took it on the silver lake sand dunes and what not , but then just as I got it all up to snuff and started enjoying it- I got a phone call.
Sorry for the long f-in story but you got to hear this, the phone call was my boss at work he proceeds to tell me that the guy with that sweet thing, junked out the engine and his wife is going to leave him if he did not sell it, apparently he spent all of their money on it and then he must of ran the poor thing at 85mph for thousands of miles without setting his valves or changing his oil, and it was a fresh engine so I think it still had the original oil and valve adjust, he never brought it back in after we where built his engine,
So I sold that thing I just got for $4000 and bought that other one for about half what he had into it, his wife made him do it , I felt bad for the guy but he called to see if any of us wanted it so of course I got it, I rebuilt the engine and drove it till it got cold, it was one of the most unbelievable deals ever! But the only thing that it does not have is the right beam and when it got a paint job they painted over the fender welting, so I need to fix that stuff, besides that it is ready for the shows and the dunes, I am going to post some pics in the gallery when I can borrow my Uncles digital camera. Well thatĘs my 181 story for the past year, so how did you come across your 181 and what do you want to do to it? Lets get started back on the right foot and get some 181 treads started!

nice we could meet and do this but first lets figure out what other stuff we might have for each other, what do you need? what do you want to get rid of? what vws do you have? I have alot of parts and need alot of parts, I do not have any rims for you but there is a huge show at the Lansing civc center on sunday put on by the MI buggy builders club, I guarentee you could find them there.
tell me what you need and have and we can make a deal, I am all about doing trades, I am sure I could get you a good deal on that heater if you are at all interested, lets talk and when we figure everything out, then I could try to get some digital pics of the heater and anything else you might want.

Brian; I think that I still have four white spoke rims off of a thing behind my shed. Give me until after this weekend and I'll see if they are still there.

Chris:
I don't have a front beam for a 181 any more, the deal did come together... but I have the next best thing. I removed the triangular brackets, bolts, and cut the mounting brackets off an old beam, so I now have a "do it yourself" thing beam kit to retrofit to your bug beam. let me know if you are interested.

I have a lead on a beam, I am going to meet the guy at the VWOA, Vintage VW club show/swapmeet in Auburn Hills MI. coming up soon, if that does not go though I may be interested in the kit, that is the next best thing! but I am going to try to get the whole beam, I still need the support arms. do you need any parts?, or are you still looking for a heater? You should think about going to that meet, it is a good show and swap!
