I was at the local pull your own part yard and saw a 68 with a 1500 single port in it. I'm thinking about salvaging the engine.
Removed were the generator, carb, distributor, and fuel pump. Manifold is still on. It turned over by hand without klunks. Could not get underneath the car. Judging by condition of muffler, and the lack of rust on the exhaust nuts and studs, some work had to be done to the engine. Crank end play seemed minimal.
For $50, and a hour-long mudbath I can pull the engine out myself. I do have a distributor, carb, and generator from another engine.
Is it worth the effort and $$ gamble to pull this?

Even if it doesn't work out, you could potentially save that bug for 50 bucks (plus $20 for a fuel pump) DO it. If it doesn't work, cut your losses and part it out.
