in a bay you need to remove the entire drive train in one piece to re and re the auto tranny - not sure about this on a vanagon. i've seen people take the engine out alone, but it really doesn't come out properly, you will end up with bent lower engine studs for sure if you try. i have a fixture that i use, it bolts to a large floor jack and holds the entire drive train, so i can remove and install the complete mess myself.

personally, I did my 77 and dropped motor and tranny seperately. Now I never left the motor on the van and just treid to drop the tranny, perhaps this is what Scott is referring to. I hate the unweildyness of a tranny and motor together. Just take off those torque plate bolts and take your time before yanking and you'll be OK ....

Also, I believe the torque convertor bolts are accessible from underneath, so if you drop the motor and tranny together, you'll need a way to get that wrehch in there afterwards, unless you undo them in the van first ...

The torque converter bolts are accessed through a hole in the upper area of the engine case on the left side, so that is not an issue.

I have done it both ways in the past on manual trans models of the bay.

I have always been able to leave the automatic in place and not bend the studs or mess anything up, but I have seen plenty of people make a mess of things and bend the studs on both auto and manual engines.

Thanks for the additional info Scott. Especially about the valve body. I have a friend who just did the auto rebuild himself on his 412 and I think he can help me do the Vanagon model as I am pretty sure they must be similar.

Do you have any pics of the jig you use that pulls the engine and trans that attaches to said floor jack?

There is actually enough room to remove the automatic section and leave the differential half behind. This will not allow you to replace the torque convertor to drain and replace the seal. If the torque convertor seal has not been leaking and the pan is not full of burnt crud, you may want to try this method. The transaxle complete is a very very heavy assembly. The differential case is made of cast iron not aluminum. Be carefull if you are using a floor jack and jackstands to drop the complete assembly. It could mush your fingers if it falls on them.

Yeah that is what it is... the type 1 auto stick and the type 3 are removed from underneath.

i finally got around to uploading these so i could post them.

this is a crude piece of fabrication, literally made from scrap steel found outside our old shop, but it works wonderfully well. i can think of a few small modifications i would do if i was going to make it again, but the idea is pretty sound. it needs to be able to attach to the floor jack, and all cheap jacks use the exact same pad, so you need to get one of those at a tool store, they are sold separate from the jack, or you need to fabricate something with the correct size steel round bar. you need the thing to rotate and to "teeter" to allow for the fact that your vehicle may not be level. if you look at the 3rd photo you can see the simple deal i did to make it teeter, and stay put with bolts to control the amount of angle.

this fixture allows you to easily remove the entire engine and tranny in one shot, it is very safe and secure. patent pending Smile.

Thanks very much Scott for taking the time to post the pics and follow up.

I appreciate that.

I hope some others will too. Smile
