| Just like the headline says. What did you pay and what kind of work did you have done? Quality? What sort of price variation are we looking at from doing the prep myself or having the shop do it. |

In my case lets call it $4,500. However the following was included:
-Removal of Bumpers
-Removal of trim, all glass, all lights, running boards, interior, horn, dash pad, rain catcher in the deck lid, license holder, etc.
-Removal of all 4 fenders, both doors, hood, deck lid, gas tank, & wheels
Each of the above body panels was sanded on both sides, primered on both sides, and painted on both sides with PPG single stage urethane. Wheels (5) were sandblasted and painted, so was the fuel tank, and all the trim pieces. The inside of the bumpers were sanded and painted gray. Then everything was put back together.
In addition the luggage are sheetmetal was replaced and painted. |

Prices will vary depending on location, prep and the quality you want.
I live in NY and prices range from $50/hr to $80/hr.
Lucky for me a friend is a 2nd generation body/paint guy and owns his own shop. I worked the following deal with him:
I do all the disassemby
I supply all the body parts
I never ask when it will be done
I pay as it progresses
I put it back together
He had it for 11 months and estimated he put 300 hours into it. My cost not including body parts... $3800.
It needed alot of rot repair and the paint was PPG single stage.

| $50- sand and shoot, looks like crap. Had a primer/camo job on it, had to tow it from CAli to INdiana. Two nights before, I started sanding, removed everything, shot primer, shot color. Got a gallon of Yamaha limegreen from another truck(semi) I did at the shop. (In all reality, I can paint, just didn't have tghe time at that point. For quality, I'd say the ave. around here is $600-$2000 |

go ask around and you'll be lucky to find a decent shop to even wanna "paint" your car for less than 3500 bucks. some people say, "yeah, i want a paint job". ok, so you want the dents, rust, nicks, chips, scratches painted over? oh yeah, so do you want me to align your sagging doors and decklid so that after the paint job your don't chip them up again? how about the flaking paint in the door jambs, should i just paint over that or leave it so it doesnt match? how about pulling out the windows, door handles, trim? free?? how about materials? free?
2000 bucks is a cheap paint job, the 20,000 was a ballpark resto price. pretty hard to give the guy a rough guess with no pictures or details. |

I believe he said nothing about giving him an estimate on his vehicle, rather you provide him with some information of what work/prep was done to yours so that he could get a feel for how much he was getting in to financially before making a decision to paint the car... Am I correct in your intentions nicktingey? |

I'll relate my experience as best as I can. It's a Ghia but with the exception of not being able to unbolt and replace the fenders its about the same.
I have posted this story a couple of times and the question of how much it costs to do paint and body work seems to come up all the time. I am not a bodyman. To do it right takes, in my opinion, the same sort of talents that a master carpenter or machinist has . I feel it is a specialized trade. I also believe that anyone who has a great desire to do something well on his/her own can probably end up doing acceptable body and paint work. DIY is almost always cheaper.
So... I am paying a competent restoration specialist with 20 years of experience. I elected to do as much of the grunt work as possible. I delivered to him a body shell (no pan) that had been stripped of all the undercoating and most of of the exterior paint. He estimated 196 hours of labor to finish strippng and media blasting the rest of the body. Prep and prime to keep it from rusting while he replaces some rust damage which was minimal and mostly confined to the lower inner fenders and the rear lower quarter panels. Then you have panel alignment and metal straightening. Block sand to smooth out the body. Seam sealer then paint and clearcoat. Finally colorsand, buff and polish. At $35.00 per hour that adds up to $6860.00. That just labor. Materials such as paints, thinners sealers, sanding supplies, welding supplies add up to $2996.00 for a grand total of $9156.00. Now I will tell you that the cost is actually approaching $15000.00 because as you dig further into a restoration surprises come up. I have also had him do some extra customizing.
Its alot of money to spend on a car that will not be worth the price it cost to restore but I most likely have one chance to make a truly special car that I will be able to enjoy for a long time. I guess the bottom line is, the more you can and want to do yourself the less it will cost.

I wasn't asking for you guys to price the job on my car I was asking how much YOU paid to have yours painted and what it all included.
If you guys want to price mine here:
The body is 100% original and straight. Doors are fine, fenders are great, everything no bondo or anything. I'm looking for a two tone. Brighter yellow with the white sides. I'm not looking for any AMAZING show paint jobs or anything but something that will shine for a while. Thanks guys! |

| i think your best bet would be to take your car to a few local shops and have them look at it. prices and labor rates vary by location. you should definitely disassemble it yourself, that will save you a ton of money. if you wanna hold the shop accountable for a warranty on the paint job, let them prep it. if you scuff and sand it yourself, they might not guarantee it if your paint starts flaking off. |

Got mine done for free. I picked up a book online resources and painting dvd and a hvlp gun for 40 at harbor freight. i went to an auto place and asked lots of questions than gathere info and proceed to painting my car. it only cost 400 in supplys

| i have about 2000k in my car between body and paint. thankfully my car didn't need much body work and i swear by my painter. Merzees paint and body in santa fe springs california. awesome guy with amazing talent. |

20k for house of kolor chameleon maybe and the entire car completely redone with something ghosted in it too |
A multi-color Kandy metalflake paint job can easily fetch $20k Then of course you have the bodywork to contend with. |
