Neil, you got a pic of that bumper? I'm confused now. You got a 64 that came factory with a late model bumper? Please post pics. I looked through your gallery but didnt see it. _________________ Frank

That's my problem. When I got the car, there were no bumpers. I have never seen an early "indented" bumper. I don't know what I should have. _________________

yes cool bumper none the less, rare? yes for a 1970-1973 notchback or fastback, I'd consider it one of the only rare or hard to find parts during those model years
as for the early car with the option code, its most likely an error on the birth cert. we have never seen a plate indent bumper for early cars, and none of the factory books show it as they do with this late version

I'd never considered an error on the birth certificate. I just went and checked my parts books for M-codes. My '61 parts book doesn't have the M-code section at all; my '65 parts book does not list M286 in it; the '69 parts book has it, but the page it's on is marked suppliment 12, dated 1972. You just may be right. I guess I won't look too hard for one of them then. _________________

I read that VW offered this M-Code 286 bumper as an option for early-model Italian Market Type-3s as well. The reason is that the License Plate doesn't fit in the designated area alotted by VW. I'm sure they offered it to other markets with the larger plates, as Neil's car from Holland indicates. I'm constantly coming across M-Codes that are not listed on the Samba, when I find them in various parts books from around the world.
I have a parts book that has some M-Codes that are not listed here... Maybe Ev may want to add these to the list.
M 254 Mud Flaps Type 311-368
M 255 Laminated Windshield Type 311-368 Export Markets
M 269 With Large Air Cleaner Type 311-368 Dusty Regions
M 270 Speedometer in Miles Type 311-368 Export Markets
M 272 Larger Rear Reflectors Type 311-368 Sweden
M 275 With Sealed Beam Unit Type 311-368 USA, Canada
M 284 Side-Mounted Flash Indicators Type 315-318, 365-368 Italy, Austria, Denmark
Finally, fellow Clubber, Gary Hoover, received his Birth Certificate where VW indicates two other M-Codes which are not identified; M 253 and M 442. He has a very rare 1500 TS Model from Canada. He also states that his car has a Chrome Stick-Shift Handle. Not sure yet what he means. Anyone out there have any insight on these two mysterious M-Codes?

The 62 Variant i got from Frank has the M 286 rear bumper prepared for number plate on the birth cert. And that car was destined for the Netherlands.
I would love to see an early bumper preped for a plate like that late one. |

WOW 300 bucks for that thing??
The gas heater, bumper, and motor are a steal for that much money. If i lived further up north I would be all over that thing!
BTW ISP when are you coming out with the M286 bumper? |

Hmmmm. Interesting, as the Variant actually wouldn't even need that bumper for the Italian plate. In fact, German sets from the period issued for Variants have the long plate for the front, and a "square" plate for the rear, in matching numbers. Buses got this type of plate as well. the M286 bumper would really only be necessary in markets that had plate fitment issues- in other words, ONLY offered the long front and square rear plate. the bumper would also only be necessary on Type 31 cars, not Type 36 cars. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни!
