I enjoy custom cars for the most part. It's neat to see where peoples tastes lie, and sometimes I get ideas for what I want to do with my own car. Then again sometimes you run across something like this and realize that someone put a lot of skill and effort into a vehicle, and ended up with the tackiest Thing on the road. Strange.

I'll go against the grain here- i think it is intriguing as hell.

Although, i think it would look better with a longer wheelbase and a stock height top.

I agree with Bjones in that it's intriguing. It's this type of thinking that keeps this hobby alive. To each his own.

I'd gladly take a ride in that thing.

A curious Thing for sure... I would like to know how the drive train works and if it actually has a dual axle and do the axles float allowing for extreme traction... Also and perhaps more importantly,,, What the heck is with the rear midget doogie doors or what ever the heck they are used for.. I like the looks on the guys faces watching it travel past...

I like it, reminds me of a WWII German Army Half-track. Like KMann I wonder how many of the rear wheels are "Drivers" and what the power plant is.??

Looks like a little tank. I wonder also if the rear 4 tires get power or not. If they do, kinda like a 4x4 Thing.

So what has happened to this Thing?
The photo description in the gallery says it was at Carlisle, PA Spring Swap Meet 1992.
So it is (or was) an east coast vehicle.
It so unusally and distinctive, I can't believe no one has any knowledge of what happened to it or its whereabouts.
Any clues from anyone?

Shortening a VW pan is easy.... To lengthen it is a much more complex project. The rear doors really bug me. What purpose could they serve? Considering the ammount of work it took to alter them rather than just fill the area... The wheels and tires and other features are confusing in terms of the intended design of the vehicle. Lots of hours, resources and $$ to build such a funny car... That Thing has to be sitting somewhere gathering dust considering the fact that so far this is its first appearance in many years.. Has anyone ever had any previous exposure to this Thing? I thought I had a rather comprehensive image collection of rare Things but I have never even heard of this one... It now lives on the next edition of the RoMTOC CD "thing pictures" files

Wait a minute!!!
An auction is in order before we haul it off the scrap pile!
Seems only fair for a low production, thirty plus year old vehicle....
I bid on the wheels....all six....
And any interior heat ducting parts, either air or gas systems....
I reserve the right to bid on any other parts too....
:-))

All we need to do is find the vehicle, and the owner.....then the fun can really begin!
:-))

Before you bid on the 6 wheels.. Look again. Not Thing wheels. Thing wheel are not slotted. 14" bus wheels are slotted. But if they are bus wheels how did they get then not to rub. Bus wheels rub badly on a Thing. I suspect that the rear body extension was fabricated from Thing doors... Next look at the area between the front and rear fenders. There seems to be a non Thing lift covering. This makes me really wonder about the drive train. In the mid sixties I was at the drags and a guy had put a big Mopar VW and drive train under a Bug Body.... The blower came out fo the front bonnet. It was cool and not completely uncommon in those days. As you continue to look under the rear wheel wells you see lots of steel that looks like a rear wheel drive water cooled vehicle... I suspect a non Thing powered vehicle.. Look also at the rear tail light. It comes from a pre WWII american vehicle. This sends a signal to me that the builder might be into American Metal... Sure would be cool to contact the Vaghn Brothers and find out if they have any other info on the picture....

The owner must be embarassed to drive it or a picture would have been posted before now. It says that one was taken in 1992.

someone dug up this old thread, and i just read it.

looking at the picture carefully, it looks like the pan is not "streched" at all, the rear wheels are really at the correct wheelbase. they added a set of wheels under the rear door. looking at this, would actually be not super hard to do.
