I am thinking about putting a '94 subaru legacy engine into my '82 westy and was wondering if anyone on here has done this before and how hard the wiring harness is to figure out. I am going to get the KEP kit but I was looking for any opinions on this. Thanks

You don't mention if your 82 is aircooled or a diesel. Assuming it's a diesel, then the Subaru conversion is a pretty cool way to go. If it's aircooled, I've heard it can still be done but with copious amounts of fabrication.

If you're in CA, the Subaru conversion is the only one right now that is smog-legal. The other ones are supposedly on the CARB's desk, but don't hold your breath for approval until it's a done deal.

The smog ref told me specifically that Jetta engine conversions from South American for Vanagons are not allowed.

Contact www.tiico.com for the latest CARB exemption status.

Deaffy I have an aircooled van. What fabrications do I have to make for the conversion? I thought that the swap would be the same I will just need to add the radiator, lines and tanks. Am I missing something here, if so please let me know. Thanks for all the links they are a great help.

Apologies to everyone who posted the other good links and info,
I had never heard conversions talked about that much in this forum so that's why I said what I did in my first post.

I stand corrected! Embarassed

good luck with your conversion efforts....

It seems I spoke just a little too early. Tiico just achieved carb exemption status.
