Check out craiglist in your local area, and punch in Audi wheel, you would be amazed at the 16" nice wheels for less then $300 in most cases.
I've seen whole packages with tires that are very good. |
Thanks Big B, but I think I'm going with Option 1. I'm gona shop locally for a nice set of tires. I may go to..... yes I said it.....Costco. Political righteousness is commendable but expensive
I'll be in Taiwan visiting my in-laws for X-Mass from the 22nd to the 5th of the next year. That should give me plenty of time to weight my options and pick some 15" tires.
And the predicted winner is.....OPTION 1

Ok all, its done
Despite popular opinion I went with option#2 Go Westy couldn't come up with a rim and tire package for the Reigns and I didn't feel like hunting for the correct tires and paying for the mounting and so on. I was torn between the two and this was the deciding factor. When they come I can just bolt um on and hit the road. I am still a little nervous about the clearance issue. Unlike the Reins these other rims are 16x7.5" and the van seams to sit a little lower than the average stock air cooled. I'm hoping she doesn't rub.
So here they are
I'll take some before and after picks just to show off _________________ 82 Air-cooled Westy (Lola)...My other vehicle is a subway. |

Choice #2 is what I may eventually go with one day. Please let me know how the car handles going 70 mph in windy conditions. I have factory spec tires and have to fight with the steering wheel on windy days. I don't know what gives. Is it the high profile tires or are they all like that due to being tall and top heavy? |

You lucky, lucky man They haven't contacted me about shipping cost yet, but I think it will be high. I'm clear across the country in NYC
I ordered the rims over the computer and for some reason their system was not able to calculate the shipping on the spot. I'm still waiting for an email or something. No rush though, I've got plenty of time. I'm still in Taiwan visiting my in-laws and my Van is on a separate vacation in Jersey at a friends house. Who am I kidding, I can hardly wait to get these rims on my Lola I'm practically loosing sleep over it
On a side note, has anybody seen these bad boys over in the classifieds under the tire and rim section? If they came as a 7x16" rim and tire package I would have got them hands down over both the Reigns and the alloys that I chose. Come to think of it Gowesty didn't give a name to the rims I got They just call them alloys. Hmm anybody know what they are called out on the street?
Oh yea here's a shot of those gas burners

My shop allowed me to mount and balance my own wheels. Call me simple, but learning to complete my own services makes me very happy. The Ronal wheels bolted-up with no problems or issues. Great look and fit.

QDog, what tires did you end up running on your Ronals? I stuck 225/60's on there and I rubbed the edge off with the lip of the body with the same wheels, I need to find an alternative tire size. _________________ Markus |

Markus,
They are 215-55R16 (97H) TOYO snow tires. The only problem I have is the sliding door rubbing on the sidewall. It is not too bad and I will adjust the door as time/money allows.

Funny about rubbing with tires that size - must be the ET of the wheels and/or something in the tire's design. I have no trouble with 225/60/16 Michelin MXV4+ tires on GoWesty rims like Luvavdubs has ordered above. They don't rub in any driving situation, but I notice occasionally if the right rear tire is on a high spot on the ground, the sliding door ever so slightly rubs. But this isn't often and it never impedes use of the door.

Ahh that’s so nice to hear I have to say I was a little worried about rubbing Those look nice!
So let me get this straight, 225 50 16s are taller than 215 60 15s? _________________ 82 Air-cooled Westy (Lola)...My other vehicle is a subway. |

phil, its the ET of those particular Ronals, I get yelled at evertime my wife gets in the because she always rubs her leg on the tires and gets a black mark! They stick out a little farther than most. Mine just rub in a "dive" situation, its annoying to say the least. _________________ Markus |

I don't think so in most cases, but when experimenting It's wise to know the diameter, revolutions-per-mile, and section width of each tire to see how they compare to the OEM ‘razor blades’.
The 225/60R16/RF MXV4+ tires on mine are pretty big both in diameter and section width – 26.8” diameter, 785 revolutions-per-mile, 9.3” section width. I can't imagine anything bigger fitting without problems.
http://www.michelinman.com/assets/pdfs/doc_energymxv4plus.pdf
The 215/65R16 HydroEdge you are installing by comparison are the same diameter as mine with the same revolutions-per-mile, but are about 5/8" narrower at 8.7" section width.
http://www.michelinman.com/assets/pdfs/doc_hydroedge.pdf
Also, If you look at the two tire’s images at Michelin’s URL’s above you’ll see the MXV4+ has a “round” profile, and the HydroEdge a “square” profile at the tread shoulder. The “rounder” shape was of some advantage in fitting the wider section to the car, by that I mean clearance up front at the frame/body when turning sharply under jounce. In any case, with the slightly narrower section of the 215/65/16 HydroEdge you should have no troubles in this area, regardless of tire “shape”, and certainly no clearance problems between the right rear tire and sliding door.
I could imagine there might be a more noticeable power loss with an air-cooled van than a Wasserboxer due to the larger diameter of these two tires, but in my case the drop in RPM at 80mph was a very welcome thing.
Good luck on yours – post a few pics when you get ‘em on there!
ERICTHENORSE – I thought of you the other day, I saw an identical set of Audi wheels to yours - the black incarnation, and of all things they were on an Audi! A black-on-black TT, no less. The unpainted set in the image look identical to those on a friends 914-6. They look Bitchen on ‘square’ bodied cars, and they are SO German - gotta love that.
QDOG – Your wheels do look good though regardless of the wifey's lament - easy to keep clean, and bolted to a pretty clean bus as well. |

They also have a technical section at www.tirerack.com You could spend hours reading about speed ratings, load ratings, etc...
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/tiretech.jsp
You can also search by manufacturer, and they will tell you the revs per mile for each brand and size... _________________ '69 bug--rusty as hell

Wow
Extremely helpful! Thanks allot! I think I'm all out of question
The loss of low end pep is not really a problem for me. I've come to grips with my Lola's total lack of power and have learned to sit back and enjoy the ride. Its all about the journey ya know. I'll be looking into the Subaru conversion in about a year or so when we move out to LA Then I can put these rims and tires to the test. _________________ 82 Air-cooled Westy (Lola)...My other vehicle is a subway. |
