Found a 1982 with WBX engine in it while searching for a wiring harness for my 82 vanagon at the junkyard. It's all factory and had some wierd labels on it saying it was exempt from emisions. I took the wiring harness out of it but even it is a little different and will need some work to get it to adapt to my 82 aircooled. |

no, it's not a diesel. It was a WBX engine. I even thought that as well but right on the dash it said unleaded fuel only and above the gas cap it said the same. |

Two questions: Are you sure it’s an ’82? Was the diesel replaced with a gas boxer with the exempt stickers left over from it’s former life? _________________ HerrBGone

Yep, built July of 82 according to the sticker.
If it was a Diesel replacement they went through a lot of trouble to do it. It looked 100% factory all the way down to the Unleaded Fuel only stickers. It even had A/C.
Myself and another VW guy who is knows much more about Vanagons then I crawled all over it for two hours. He is convinced it was either a prototype or test vehicle. I'm just convinced it was kind of neat and was stock.
Also one more thing (to me) say this was a stock WBX Vanagon. The same sticker inside the engine compartment that said it was emissions exampt also said that the motor was a 1.9L but didn't say gas or diesel. Now correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the Diesel motors 1.6 and the WBX motors 1.9L? It also had sparkplugs. |
