Here is how I fixed the problem. I ordered from the VDO gauge "fix it"guy (address below), 5 extra light bulb sockets that come with the VDO gauges. I am pleased with how well it lights up the tack the other 3 gauges (OP, OT and CHT) in the dash. and now the fuel gauge, speedo and the heater swith. They are considerably brighter than the weenie little bulbs VW put in there, because they expose more and brighter bulb into the gauge.
I removed the gauge cluster, drilled a slightly larger hole for the holder behind the cluster panel and just slide the new bulb holders in there. I think it was about a 3/8 inch bit. It was lot easer than anything else I could think of.

I dealt with a guy named Mario, who took care of me. The socket is # V/A-600-840 @$3.75 and I bought a 4 pack of bulbs to fit them #V/A-600-815 for $3.37. I ended up buying 5 sockets so I would have a spare for something.
It worked for me. |
