I was adjusting my valves today and I adjusted 1,2 and was on 3. The valve on the left on #3 was too tight. I tried to adjust it but no matter how much I loosen it it would not be enough to slide the feeler gauge under. I loosen it to the point where the whole nut and screw came out. Why can't I adjust that valve correctly? _________________ 1964 Beetle Convertible |

If the screw came out you were tightening it.
That's the #3 exhaust valve and if the valve back the screw all the way and it's still tight, then the seat has sunk into the head and it's time to be replaced.
This is the one I have.

Something is not right. As suggested, I'd turn the engine 180 degrees and see if the valve opens up. I'm not being a smartass, but have you adjusted them before? _________________ Designed for four soldiers and a machine gun...also for family use.

Yea this is my second time adjusting them instead of paying someone to do it. I will look at it more closely tomorrow but when I was on #1 I turned it left 180 for #2 and 180 Left for #3. I think that is the correct way. I also checked to see if I really started on #1 by seeing if the rockers moved on #1 and they didn't. _________________ 1964 Beetle Convertible |

One way to tell if you're doing the right valve at the right time is to grab the rocker, push it in and pull it out. If you hear "click, click, click", and you're at top dead center, then you should be good to adjust it.
After you've done them a few times, you get to where you can almost judge the gap by the sound of the click. That's how I know which ones to double-check with the feeler gauge, anyway. _________________ 68 Beetle

If the valves are tight you won't hear a click.
The only way to be sure is to observe the valves as you hand turn the engine making sure you're on "overlap". When the exhaust closes and the intake starts to open, back the engine to the TDC mark. _________________ Glenn

True. I guess I was just thinking it sounded like he was adjusting the wrong one, rather than the valve being as tight as what he was saying. _________________ 68 Beetle

ok. the valves are fine. I was 1/2 a turn too much with the pully when I was adjusting. The problem now is I just put the covers back on with the old gaskets and the left head leaked a little but the other side was fine. I thought I would fix that with new gaskets and I placed them on. It was the exact problem again. The left was leaking and the right was just fine. What could be wrong? _________________ 1964 Beetle Convertible |

Is the bale (wire holder) in the correct position? Was the lip of the cover and the edge of the head clean? Were there any knicks in the edge of the head? _________________ Ted Wojton
