Oil temp sending unit wiring question

How is the wire from the positive terminal on the guage hooked up (not the light, I figured that out)? Can it be run directly from the terminal on the gauge to an "always hot" wire, or does it need to go to a terminal that is only hot when the key is turned on?

I think the VDO instruction with my gauge said to go to the keyed hot wire, so I did. I don't know if you have to but I did.

I was tempted to go to the "always hot power" under the glove box, but I didn't.
