Super Beetl Steering Box. Who has taken one apart?

Being the kind of person who would rather figure out how to fix it then buy it anyone have any first hand experiance with a super beetle steering box? Mine has the main shaft slidding up/down about 1/16" to 1/8" as the front wheels are turned by hand. I think i may be able to adjust some of it out but since my wife and kids will drive this car i want to do it right.

I have rebuilt early bus steering box's many times so i am familier with some aspects of the VW steering box but according to my Bently this box is a bit more complicated.

Anyone have any advice?

I have not taken one apart... not sure if it is worth the effort, plenty of good used ones available.

I have about 5 on the shelf PM's welcome.

Taking it apart is quite easy. You can check with Topline for a rebuild kit if you want.
