Ok,
I recently bought a 61 single cab. She's a real sweet thing, just havin' troubles starting her (sounds like my old wife) LOL when she's cold.

She starts ok when warm/hot or after being started or running. I know she needs a full tune up (points/plugs/cap/rotor/wires/carb work) but what can I do to at least get 'er goin'? She drains the battery getting started cold!

It's a stock 40HP with stock electric choke, 30PICT and 009.

Where do I start with the least amount of funds and time. I'd really like to drive 'er!

Thanks!!!!!!

Is the choke working at all, or is it just stuck open?

Clean the spark plug tips with a pocket knife, gap them to about .026", and don't strip them putting them back in. File or emory cloth the points and reset them and blow out all the dust. Chip the corrosion off the rotor with a pocket knife and wash them, Pull the wires and push them back in a few times. Change the oil.

I think your accelerator pump diaphragm has a hole in it so it does not shoot that all important squirt to fire things up when you pump the gas. They get stiff and crack if the vehicle sat for very long...pretty cheap and easy to fix.

Very detailed and simly most simply excellent info Chazwood!
Great thought! Cool
lol Really like your saying.......''the Earth is air cooled''. Gotta love 'em old VWs! It turns heads and gets more compliments than any other car I've ever owned. And, it's so inexpensive and a blast to drive!

I'll replace the carb. diaphram. It does sound like the problem, doesn't it. The previous owner said it was fine.........but it did sit for awhile.

Thanks again Chazwood!

It sounds like your carb setting is too LEAN. A warm/hot motor will run on a leaner mixture than a cold motor will. So if your carb diaphragm or small orifices are plugged/varnished up it will be hard to start cold. choke plate will play a role as well .

LEAN? Is that too much air? I'll make the adjustment.

THANKS!
