I guess this is a somewhat van related topic... I thought I'd post pics of my son's Cub Scout Pinewood Derby car. It's complete with working LED head and tail lights, table, full interior, etc....

Come on... a Cub Scout didn't build that. _________________ Glenn

I let me son build all of his cars and they look like a 7-10 year old made them.
Best he did was 2nd place in his Pack.
BTW... he's 15 now and became a Eagle Scout last week.
Tell you boy to stay in scouting and he can do it also. _________________ Glenn

Well, in all fairness two points of consideration:
1) no cub scout ever builds their derby car. I am looking forward to continuing that grand tradition by building my son's in a few years.
2) a vanagon ain't gonna win no races... especially not with the top popped. Unless there is a wrx motor in the back?

My "perspective" mantra:
A Volkswagen Vanagon is just a material thing,
As such, it is of the earth,
And if i need to, I can let my Van go. |

We also built a second car for speed. This one was really slow. The other car got 2nd. |

That's very cool! VW busses are built for comfort... not for speed! Did it come in under the 5 ozs. or whatever the weight limit was?
My first pinewood derby car was 2 tapered rails with a wire frame holding a tapered lead bullet on the top. My dad helped with the design, made suggestions like graphite on the axles and smoothing the ribs on the wheels, but he made me do the bulk of the work. We made a plaster mold for the bullet. He melted down the lead tire weights and poured it, but I shaped it with a rasp and some files. Great thing to do for your kid... "here... grind on this chunk of lead for awhile!"

That's funny. I remember melting lead when I was a kid also. The van meets the 5 gram limit if you remove the top, table, sleeping bags, and battery. |

And the 1/8th ounce of pot....
But seriously - I'm an eagle scout. Never a finer institution to learn how to light things on fire! |
