I am going to convert my '78 Westy over to dual carbs...
What I need to know is; rather than cap off the return line to the tank and risk it leaking, can I just use a tank from an earlier non-fuel injected bus?
Are the tanks from, say, a 72 bus the same dimensions wise, as my '78 and are the filler neck locations in the same place, etc.?
Oh, and you can save the arguing over Carb conversions for another thread. _________________ "Saying what we think gives us a wider conversational range than saying what we know."

Why not use both outlets, running a fuel line from the return to a tee in the main fuel supply line before the fuel filter? Might be simpler. Jeremy |

I would tee them together up near the outlets and then rule a single hose down to the filter. It's simpler that was and if one opening gets clogged you can still use the other one. If you block it off or switch to an earlier tank you loose this capability. A stop cock would be useful for changing filters...
Swapping out tanks is risky from the point of view that the new tank you find may be in worse shape that your own.
The pump is gravity fed so anything on the inlet side of the pump will flow in the same direction.
Although the capacity stayed the same, the shape of the tank changed in 72 so you can't strap down an earlier tank without modification. I don't think the tank side opening was different even though the fuel filler opening changed in 74 but I'm not sure.
Here's for VIN data for the tanks:
- there is a 72-73 1/2 tank (up to 213 2138 900)
- 73 1/2 - 74 1/2 (up to 214 2132 408)
- the rest were FI tanks. I think the last of the 74 tanks must have been for CA automatic models that were FI. _________________ '78 Westfalia CDN

I suggest keeping the current tank and either blocking it off or t-ing into the other line. This is so the next owner can put the FI back on without cursing you too much. |

Buskatiers are everywhere! Gerald is by you in Houston. I'm in California but was just back at Bustoberfest a few weeks ago in Nebraska with the Buskatiers. Feel free to join up, we are a nice group.

It would be my pleasure! I sometimes think I should rename the bus "Towcow" I'll e-mail Gerald on the Buskatier list and see if he has a Samba screen name. You can go to www.buskatier.org and sign up and find him there also _________________ 71 Westy Roadcow
