I part out watercooled VW's for a living, but this is the first aircooled I have touched. What should I save off of it?

the front trunk has a small dent, otherwise its fine. Worth saving?
decklid is good, saved.

other parts I will pull are the obvious tails, door panels, speedo, clean interior parts.

is the auto trans worth pulling? what about the glass? worth it?

Hood for sure... 71 -72 super only and no or no decent aftermarket stamped hoods available for that year.

Fresh air box under hood.

Fuel tank if it is not crudded up...

Several members on here have autosticks and I'm sure someone would want the trans /shifter and other components for spares or to get one going.

You might keep that vent elbow off the passenger side also.

you mean that little piece that was connected to the fresh airbox?

I am guessing the fuel tanks are super beetle only, not older beetle?

the tank looks good.

Correct... that tank if clean inside will make a good replacement for someone with a 71-74 Super.

The 2 heater hose "accordian" pieces in the car should be saved. And any of the relay's in the fuse box, the wiper assembly, the headlight, wiper and emergency switches and the small switch and rectangular plastic piece in the dash for the 2 speed fan in the fresh air box...

If the drivers door panel is in as good a shape as that passenger one and the rear quarters are still good someone may want them... if you take them off the car, take the arm rest off and all the clips and try to store them flat and dry so they don't warp out.

Can't tell in the picture but you can't find chrome vent trim (the vent behind the rear window on each side) anywhere, just black, so if the chrome is still there then someone may want it. Also, did it have 3 point seat belts? I see many things there that I'm missing.

Otherwise, that whole thing looks a lot better than mine. Why not put an engine in it and roll it? It looks like it just needs some bolt-on parts.

Dang! Just noticed you were in Iowa as well. Too bad you didn't post this before you started stripping. I would have taken the whole car and parted out mine to get this one running.

I'd save a lot off of that car - but I used to dismantle bugs as part of the mechanic job I used to have. In addition to what was said, I'd take the whole fusebox out of it. Save the emergency brake handle if the little pin that holds the equalizing is not broke off. The rubber boot for it looks OK as well. I'd take that autostick shift lever for sure. I'd save the autostick transaxle. The front struts and if any other parts of the front suspension appear to be in good shape, I'd get those too. The steering box, if in good shape, is an expensive item worth saving. If any of the fenders are in good shape and still German, I'd get those off of it.

Unless they are bent save those later model sport rims on the rear too.

Damn Becca if your car is in worse shape than that maybe we can help find you something better... If you weren't so far away I know of several in my area.

How is the chassis? Not concerned about the floor pans, but rather like the rust condition of the frame head up front..

I'm in Cedar Rapids, by the way... There's several of us around, make sure you list what you have and people will probably take most of it off of your hands!

you are welcome to come and buy some parts.

most stuff I ship, I ship about 300 watercooled shipments a month.

the frame isn't bad on this one. There is some rust on one front strut mount and another spot on the floor that isn't too bad.

its pretty stripped now.

Ok. Any chance you could take a picture from under the front, looking at the frame head? (like right under the grille area, looking at where the sway bar mounts?)

Thanks!

I've seen worse cars driving around Smile . Dents and bumps are no big deal at all, as long as there isn't a lot of rust. Even if the pans are rusted, they're so easy to replace that I wouldn't part out a car if that's all that was rusted out on it. I suspect that eventually nearly everything off of the car would be useful to someone. Too bad it's already stripped down as much as it is.

Blake28,
Take off the taillight lenses and check the steel mounts, these are 71-72 specific and you can't buy new ones. Save 'em if they are good, even if the lenses are crazed.

Interior...does it still have the four rear plastic vents either side of the rear window? Extremely hard to get....Hell, I'd take 'em Laughing even though I live in Oz....

I see the control valve is still in the engine bay. Test the solenoid with a good supply of 12 volts and listen for a "click". This'll tell you about how much you can get for it. A functioning one (that's not rusty!!!) is about $35.00US as a guide.

Does the trans have the torque converter and flex plate? Worth more if it does.....I can't see the flexible lines, are they there? Good condition ones are worth a bit...steel lines still there? I'd say not given no engine tin....

Still have a starter motor? Sell that too...

i wouldnt have parted that out.

sure it has dings and dents but that can be fixed/replaced. no major rust issues and a straight body. it would have made a nice german looker.

being parted out it becomes an empty shell and few people want that which means it either sits to rot or gets cut up and one more vw dies.

even though im not a big fan of supers i hope this car doesnt succumb to that fate.

it will get crushed in a few days. Sure, I could have sold it but only for 200 bucks tops. I'll make a lot more money off the parts.

Like I said, it was probably in better shape than mine so I'm sure somebody could have made a work car or something out of it. Some poor kid would probably get a kick out of driving it around.

Mine is so rusty that two fenders only have 3 bolts left holding them on and the body overall is on it's last legs. The PO did a terrible job hacking the early bumper on and both aprons (and hood and fenders) are completely trashed. But the pan is solid, the braking system is 100% new, I've cleaned/decorated the interior, everything works, and the engine runs smoothly so I figure I'll just drive it as it until it drops. It is a lot of fun to see people shake their heads as I drive by. There's nothing like a beat up beetle.
