|
|
Here are some pics of my 59 steering wheel that I have restored, in the first picture is all the parts I have for the horn ring and button.
I know I need springs and another plastic piece, but what I also need is some help with the missing pieces. Can some bug parts be used in my search? any help would greatly be appreciated.

some details for you
John Copello at Metalworks did make a rebuild kit - he had a few left a while back, but had no plans to make any more - i'm sure he's there to be persuaded!
$15 plus $5 postage
kit works for both the 58 & 59 steering wheel (ie metal or plastic horn push)
some previous comments attached below - btm comment is from John
see his website at www.copellos.biz
John's contact details (ie email) are on there
regards
RS
"I convinced John to make these kits a year or so ago. He used original parts from my 59 Ghia coupe as a starting point. I don't know if the parts are specific to the 58-59 Ghia steering wheel, though I would imagine that they would also work on later models as well. As I remember the kits contained 3 white plastic spacers, 3 washers, 3 new screws and 3 new springs. The screws and washers are not an exact match to the originals but they are as close as could be found and work just fine (just a warning for those out there building that concourse Ghia for Pebble Beach). The most valuable part of the kit are the plastic spacers, which rarely seem to have survived the years of constant horn blowing"
"Looking in my ancient 60-61 Parts book, it would appear the VW part numbers for the plastic spacers (141 951 561) and the spring (141 951 555) are Ghia specific for the 58-59, with the rest of the hardware just being standard metric items (4mm Screws and 4mm flex lock washers). But without samples to compare to the later hardware kit (that KGPR makes) used for the horn ring (60-71), it's impossible at the moment to see if they would interchange."
"the early horn rebuild kits come with the following
3 of each
the plastic spacers
the plastic spring cups
springs
screws
and washers
John" _________________ -StockRocks-

That looks like a metal horn button (?)... if so, it would be for an earlier 58. Later should have the plastic button. _________________ Sounding like a broken record as to why You should be measuring protein during harvest in order to better your agronomic practices. |

Good catch, eagle eye Dave!
The changeover from the metal to the plastic horn button trim, not to mention a slightly different chrome ring to fit said plastic (push-on) trim and different emblem (plastic construction instead of cloisonne' on chrome) occurred in early July of 1958, FYI... _________________ David Ruby

After chatting last night I knew I had a 58 button, and I am going to use it since the plastic is only available in repop. The wheel came with the car out of a junkyard, as I was buying it they had the horn button so I picked that up with the car. I found the horn ring on German e-bay (it looks NOS) with alittle help from a friend. I think they were pretty good scores, I got the button for $90.00, and the ring for $99.00 shipped, I was told that the button, ring and badge are worth $300.00 alone.
The plastic is well, plastic, so I will use the metal one. Thanks for copellos site, I have ordered a hinge from him and he is a top notch seller. _________________ It's not about the window, it's about the people.

nothing wrong with the plastic horn button. I'd keep an eye out for the correct setup and switch it when you get the chance.
later, plastic button on the left, early metal button on the right.

Well atleast my horn ring is 59 thanks for the pics.
Have you heard of the guy in AUS. that is repoping the plastic button? How much does a real plastic horn button go for?
I was able to unfreeze the screw on terminal for the horn wire on the part in the top of the picture yesterday. _________________ It's not about the window, it's about the people.

i know Jerry Heldt does the 58 horn push badge (& not the 59)
is Jerry doing the actual (59) plastic horn push too, then?
his lowlight badges (side/horn) are superb, IMO _________________ -StockRocks- |

How is that, the horn rings are specific to the type of button. _________________ Sounding like a broken record as to why You should be measuring protein during harvest in order to better your agronomic practices. |

I have bought some parts from him last year and they are very quality, I got the decklid script and it looked like a piece of art with the correct bends each way. I also pick up some door sill covers and they are top notch also.
Any word on his twins! _________________ It's not about the window, it's about the people.

I can tell from your pics, the button is just setting inside that ring for the pics, but I can make some pieces that will hold it into place without damaging anything. _________________ It's not about the window, it's about the people.

the 58 push must just be resting on a 59 ring..

Just find the correct button. In the past, I've traded equivilent appearance buttons, to match things up. I'd drive it with out a button long before I'd ad-hoc something as a place marker. _________________ Sounding like a broken record as to why You should be measuring protein during harvest in order to better your agronomic practices. |

I drive it all the time with out it, it has a 14" EMPI GTV in it right now.
I would rather have the real deal in the car, I am in no rush to finish the wheel. Last night I got a offer to trade my button with cash, but he could only offer the repop button. I would rather have a metal one than a repoped plastic one.
Also, you guys might get a kick out of this, but the metal one does snap into the horn ring. But Like a said, I can mke some plastic pieces that will attach the button to the horn ring without any damage what so ever until the right plastic one comes along.
As you can tell, I need bumpers first! _________________ It's not about the window, it's about the people.

Does anybody have info. on whether John is producing these kits again, as there isn't any info. on his site, and wasn't producing anymore when I enquired approx. 1 year ago, I have used beetle parts and a unique contact ring to enable the horn to work. ( better than the "door bell" set up used to get through the yearly MOT - )
Thanks

The KGPR kit is not complete. It does not come with the horn contact ring.
I've been looking for a kit for my '58 also, but to no avail.
