I am new to the VW world and am currently seeking a Westy. Most of the busses that I have found (that are in my price range) have the rear wheel wells cut out. Why would anyone do this? |

Hey Now--Don't you ever see the 70,s styled vans with the fat tires and wide rims on the rear? It wasn't necessary to always cut on the old Chevyvans and Econolines, but the VW sure didn"t leave that option! It's not impossible to repair, just pricy with welding and fabrication. It's surely not easy to find orig metal to cut off a donor.Either keep hunting or prepare for the fix. LOL |

what is your price range? i have seen more with the wheel wells intact than cut out, but i have not seen them all, and we are probably from differnt places.
if i were you i would pay a little more for the "intact westy", youl be happier.
good luck hunting
by the way i might be selling mine i a bit to fund a trip to South america. not for sale yet but something to think about.
good luck

Hey fourwinds4,
Thanks for the explanation.
And luckys420,
My price range is around $1000 to $1500. I'm looking for something to fix up, but I'm no good at bodywork. I originally was looking for a splitty, but I want the full pop top. How much will you want for yours?
And, where do you live? |

I can tell you from personal experience that you will not get out cheaper by buying a fixer upper- buying something in good shape is cheaper. Ever notice how many people are selling vehicles for half of what they have reciepts for? I know I have over $8,000 in reciepts for my old Land Cruiser and it's nothing special to look at. My VW bus was $500 and I've probably got $4,000 (rebuilt motor & tranny, body work, new rubber, new canvas, new tires, new battery, new wipers, new.... etc.) in it already and it's not on the road yet (and yes, I'm capable of doing much of my own work).
My uncle restores old British cars as a hobby. He does almost all of the work himself and when he sells them he feels like he's doing good to get his monetary investment back- his time he writes off. It's his hobby and he calls it his "therapy" to keep him sane.
My point in all of this is that if you want to personalize your vehicle it's one thing, but it will be a miracle if you come out cheaper.
Just my two cents worth.......................
