BUG OUT 59 PHOTOS/RESULTS
With over 3,000 spectators, 115 drag cars, bright sunshine, and temperatures in the 80’s it was a perfect day for drag racing at Bug Out 59 held in Manassas, Virginia. Word around the track that day had it that this was the largest Bug Out since the late 1990’s. It seems that Americans have finally adjusted to the inflating gas prices and have begun to make the haul to the race tracks once again. The buzz in the pits was centered around the ECPRA Pro Mod team of Ruff & Tuff Racing. Brothers Nathan and Reggie Lee were at the event testing for the upcoming Pro Mod Season which debuts next weekend in Xenia, Ohio at Larry’s Offroad Challenge which will also feature the ECPRA Pro Stockers.
As the Super Pro class began it was obvious that Bruce Ridgeway had the target sign on his back. Bruce is coming off a runner up finish in Farmington, the 6.90 Index win in October, Runner Up at Bug Out 58, Winner at Bug Out 57, Winner at the Spring Bug Meet in Beaver Springs, and the Winner at the Fall North vs South. After having the dream season Bruce decided to join the 2006 SEVWA Points series to put some cash and prizes with all of his wins. Bruce was paired up against Thomas Lucas in the final round and Bruce ran a 6.900/98.40mph on a 6.90 dial in while Thomas redlighted and cruised through the lights.
In the Pro class it was once again another returning champion cruising into winners circle. Gene Cook Jr in his 1972 Beetle won Bug Out 57 and 58 and was runner up at Bug Out 56. In the final round Gene was paired up against Steve Martinez making the haul from Wilmington, NC. Gene dialed in a 7.82 and ran a 7.843/86.05mph while Steve broke out with a 7.402/92.64mph on a 7.50 dial in. With over 50 cars registered in the Street class the first round of eliminations seemed to just breeze by with no cars breaking our fouling out at the line.
The final round of Street class had Dennis Rice paired up against Richard Butcher. Dennis took the win with a 9.127/80.79mph with a 8.95 dial in while Richard broke out with a 11.466/55.35mph with a 11.50 dial in. Shortly after the drag racing concluded the crowd shifted over toward the slalom track to check out the Miss Bug Out competition. In the end the last woman standing was Amy Valdez from Portsmouth, Virginia claiming Miss Bug Out 59.
