Can anyone give me a list of successful propane filling chains nationwide? Maybe places like Flying J, Pilot, or RV chains that are willing to fill the Westy. I have the filling instructions per list members if the filling tech needs a little help.

Tough question. Not all places employ Hank Hill. Translation: Not all employees are experts. So one place may do it, and yet another store in the same franchise may not. That has been my experience. YMMV. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

On the note of the unintelligent attendant I just returned from a roadtrip in my 84 and had went to fill the Propane tank at a gas station where I got gas. The attendant was an idiot and he didn't use a safety valve so when it came time to unhook it he went to drain the line and it didn't stop draining. (because my tank valve had gone bad from being empty for a year or two)
I spent 4 hours waiting for the Propane guy to come out because the attendant (with his 4-6 teeth) wouldn't listen to me and just drain the tank from the line drain valve as I told him to so we could get on our way. Anyway the guy from the propane company did just as I had been telling him for 3 hours.
So ensure that they use a safety valve even if your tank is in recent use the valves can go bad but if they use a safety valve you can just put a deposit on it and return it once it is empty.
But I didn't have anyplace even question the tank for filling.

Did you need to get anything special to replace yours? Do you remember the brand and the price?
Speaking of tank valves going bad from sitting for a year...
Thanks, and...
Best! |
