I just picked up a 79 bus to receive my 78 safari custom camper conversion. The previous owner drove it around a little, then replaced the left head to solve the no 3 cyl problem. After he put it back together it would start and idle very roughly but would dye soon after. I took it home and found the coil wires in a bad way, now it will start and idle alot better but still not very well. The thing is that when you open the throttle nothting happens, not even a hint of increased RPM's. I have not checked fuel pressure yet but it seams that it would have to have pressure to start and if you opened the throttle with even little fuel pressure it would do something. Also, it has some pretty bad oil leaks, it is dripping from every protrusion. I wonder if a leaking oil cooler in the fan shroud would distribute its juice to every corner of the engine, especialy the front toward the fan? Any help would be great. Brick wall

Horrible vacuum leaks followed by grossly-retarded timing would give you no increase in rpm. With oil all over the place, you might also want to think about doing your Basic Diagnostics Day. Check valve adjustments ( this includes your hydraulics) timing, plugs, check all of your hoses, fuel and vacuum, and do a compression test. You have a billion and one variables that we can't get traction with until there is some more information here. Oil leaks are best handled by cleaning everything well, then looking for the source. Don't go nuts with caustics and steam or anything, but a thorough wipedown.

Thanks, the diagnostic day is in the works, as is comprehensive reading. Just thought I'd see what others thought.

You can trust Colin. He knows alot about oil pouring out of every orifice.

But, hey, look on the bright side... At least it was in a laundrymat parking lot. You could "go homeless' for a minute, strip down and clean your oil soaked clothes right there! Convienent!

Well, It ran this weekend. All large vacuum hoses on intake need replacement. Does anyone know of a source for them?

If you can keep the costs down then FI is great.
