Posted: Fri Dec 24, 2004 1:41 pm Post subject: Ordering Your Karmann Ghia's "Birth Certificate" |
|
|
Q: How Can I find Out When My Karmann Ghia Was Built, What the Original Color Was? What Options it Came With? Or Where it Was Originally Sold?
A: All this information is available from the Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen in Germany, the keepers of Volkswagen’s official records.
If you request your Volkswagen’s “Birth Certificate” and pay the fee of $15 or 15 Euros they will send you a detailed information sheet listing you as the owner and providing as much information as they have available on your car.
Sample Birth Certificate:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/181016.jpg
Warning: Some birth certificates contain a wealth of information including detailed options lists, interior colors, and original engine numbers, but some do not. It is luck of the draw on how much information yours will have. However, the build-date is often important when ordering parts, and the certificate is suitable for framing, so either way it is probably worth $15 to own the certificate.
Q: How Do I Order the Birth Certificate?
A: 3 Ways: Email, fax or letter. They only take credit card payments, and the request should take the following form:

They are a bit confusing on that as well. Apparently 15 of either Dollars or Euros will get you a birth certificate, they don't care.
However, that might change with the declining dollar. That's why it might be best to just give them a credit card. |

They will ONLY take a credit card... PERIOD.
I have tried alternate means a couple of times ( including a certified cheque / money order for 15 Euros).
This was, politely, denied...and a credit card # was requested.
I haven't mailed them my CC# yet...their on-line email form is not
secure...and I don't know about you...
But I don't want my credit card information open and freely accessible on the internet.

I requested certificates this morning and received the following email (price is now 25 euro/dollars):
Dear Sir or Madam,
We are pleased to research data of your Volkswagen and to draw up a birth certificate with the recorded data regarding original engine, colour, date of manufacture, port of destination...
The price for this service is 25 euros/dollars which you have to pay „cash with order“, please. Our terms of payment are by cash or via Visa/Mastercard – card number and expiry date.
Please do not forget to inform us about the chassis number of your vehicle, the name of the vehicles‘ owner and the complete address where we should send the certificate to.
We need 4 to 5 weeks for the research.
We are looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Christine Neefe

I ordered certificates for my three VWs in late January and I see my CC was just charged for $99.45! OUCH! I guess the museum went with the 25 Euros and not the 25 dollars. I just hope these certificates don't arrive with 'no information found' on them. |

I got "Lucy's" birth certificate today.
It confirms she's the original colour & has the original 41yr old motor.
Wow!
Only took 2 1/2 months to get here. I think the price was cheap. They only charged the VISA about ~$25 Australian. (That's probably $15 Euro) |

I received mine in about two and a half months. I was charged multiple times (~$45 total) so watch for that. I emailed through the website and stated "English Please" on they wrote back in english. Price was a little high but worth every penny. |
