Found a early VDO Kienzle Bay Window clock dated 7/69. My question is that should it have the third "red" hand also? I looked on Richard's site and couldn't find an example. Does not look like it had ever been opened up. _________________ Don't Believe The Hype. |

No, the silver centered 68-72 analog clocks do not have a second hand. Only the quartz later clock have them. Here is a pic of all 3:

The left-hand analogue, non-quartz clock, with the silver-bordered grey centre, labelled 68~72?, is of the same pattern as the fuel-gauge & warning-light cluster, of my British specification, early-1973-model-year (i.e. manufactured during circa August or September 1972).
I wouldn't mind one (at a reasonable price!) for my vehicle, but they seldom turn up in Great Britain

Or anywhere else.
I'd love one myself. But whenever I see 'em, they're horribly expensive. _________________ No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always a boom tomorrow. |

Do you know if a clock from a squareback fit in a bay window? It looks the correct size but I haven't tried just yet, have 2 of them sitting in my garage. _________________ Been on the samba so long I remember petting that dog to see VWs, WYHI, and green bug girl.

I snagged my silver-center clock for about $50 + shipping if I remember right. Just happened to be in the right "place" at the right time.
thanks again, pyr0man! |

Many moons (i.e. more than 20 years) ago, I salvaged a VW 1600 Type 3 Variant or Fastback clock from the local breaker's yard, in the hope that it would fit.
The clock diameter is just right, but hacksawing the casing, to adapt it to the 1968~79 VW Type 2, instrument panel fitting, with two screw lugs, rendered the clock inoperable; probably owing to steel filings, getting into the mechanism, in the viscinity of the magnets. The other problem, is to retain the transparent lens (with integral clock-hands adjustment knob), in the coreect position.
Regards.

I have what I believe to be the example in the middle. I understand it was installed by a PO, as I think it wasn't originally outfitted with a clock?
Any quick and dirty or otherwise way to tell if a vehicle came off the line with one of these tucked in the dash already or not? If so (and I find mine doesn't belong), I will happily part with it for a cash/trade combo. (meaning some cash and the blank that would replace the hole). |

I found a clock on a late bay champagne (came standered in '78?-'79) at a salvage yard that to $6 out of my wallet. What a steal- Literally. It'd be nice to find an early bay clock though to match my instrument cluster- but I definately not going to complain here with my $6 VDO original vw bus bay clock. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Transporter "Winston"

I took that picture.
I would not be rich unless I sold them
I picked that box for the printing that was on it: This unit is not labeled for retail sale
I thought it was fitting..... |

I bought my clock for $80 plus $10 something shipping (the later model on the board)..
however, I never looked at it... I always used my radio time..
so I pulled it out and sold it... for what I paid plus shipping...
I have seen them for as much as $150+ which is crazy... but someone's obviously paying that much...? _________________ No VW right now.... |

Good evening!
Now that I was able to get home and take a few shots of the piece mounted in the dash of my 73, I thought I would show them and see if anyone would share whether or not this piece belongs and if not, if there is an interest in it for their Bus. These shots aren't the best as the lighting could've been better, but here they are:

Does the red second hand move steadily? Or does it go duh duh duh every second?
73?-74 is a sweep second hand
75-79 is a ticking second hand |

It ticks with each second.
The amazing thing is that it keeps great time, I am just funny about wanting to restoring Daisy back to as close to 'out of the box' original as possible (so if a 'blank' is what it should have - then that would be my aim).

These clocks keep very good time. They're always correct. You never have to adjust them. THe later clocks are very annoying however with that tick. It's so loud that I can here it outside of my car, even with the windows up and the doors all closes. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Transporter "Winston"

Tell me about it! duh duh duh duh
3 0'clock in morning, in the high deserts of California, no sounds outside at all on a moon lit night.... duh duh duh duh duh duh
trying to sleep after prospecting and digging all day duh duh duh duh
That is why I like the middle dark grey faced one. It is a sweep second hand: quiet!!!!
I may just have to swap faces instead of unplugging the damn thing! |
