I'm considering buying a swamp cooler for my baywindow. I'm wondering if anyone has any pictures of what this looks like mounted. Also does anyone know if it will mount on my bus being that i have ventshades mounted as well.

no help here, just wanted to say i've always wanted one. however it would be quite ineffective around here, where the humidity often matches the temperature during the summer.

I'd love one too. Here in CO it would work wonderfully. But they're always so expensive. Sad

This seems like a great idea and it is alot cheaper.
The little window unit you can get anywhere for less than a $100.

I agree.. if you're going to do that, get an AC.. cheaper and works everywhere.. where there's power anyway.

Because they didn't work that well in the first place.

Would you say then thay are most popular with the "I have this rare part and you don't" folk?

Frankly, I don't drive my VW bus much during the summer months. (Mostly because of the heat, and partly because the campgrounds are filled with children)

I might be more interested in driving during the day if I didn't feel as if I always had my head in a convection oven.

(and the temps in Northern California are nothing compared to those in Texas!)

Have to disagree. Swamp Coolers are the bees knees in Arizona, except for right after a monsoon. They're not popular because they don't work worth a crap in south Texas or anywhere that has humidity.

Working *well* is less relevant than working at all. If it cools the interior better than windows-and-vents-open, it beats nothin'.

But that all depends on the relative humidity where you live. Swamp coolers work pretty well in dry places like Bakersfield and Redding, less so in humid places like Miami and New Orleans.

here's a piture of mine.

it's not a real good shot of it but it's all i can find.

driving with it on doesn't really make much differance. it works just as well as having the window cracked or the vent wing open. i picked it up cheap and more for looks....

this style mounts to the actual glass. i've seen other that clamp to the door.

Coolers?
They can be absolutely wonderful. It's what I rely on in my house. And I really enjoy it most of the year. We're frequently in the 110's and won't be out of the 100's until October. But they need low humidity. When it gets to 20% or above it's less enjoyable and maybe time to turn on the AC.
The problem is that a "swamp" cooler doesn't cool much. An "evaporative" cooler does. It is the evaporation process that cools the air. Just being drenched with water doesn't cool it just makes the air wet. Technology has really improved how they work. All of the old classic car coolers I see these days don't have the new good pad material and are pretty much operated as a "swamp" cooler keeping the pad drenched. If they were used like an "evaporative" cooler they can do a fair job. But again the other important key is real low humidity. Another funny thing is that we put them on bugs and busses for the nostalgic looks. And the coolers date back mostly to the 50's. They pre-date our Bays by a long time.

They are currently produced in UV-stabilised plastic, by a company in Washington state, USA, but I forget the company name and Internet link for the moment!

There are two models available, with either just ram air flow, or ram air flow, plus 12V fan assistance. They are very expensive though as I recall, being circa US£400 and US$600 respectively.

Regards.
