I am going to test this theory this evening but thought I would double check for other possibilities.
I was driving my '77 westy (2.0L FI) home yesterday (interstate driving (60-65mph)). Upon exiting the interstate the bus backfired and then, upon stopping at a light the idle hesitated a bit and then smoothed out. As I pulled away from the light all was okay. Upon approacing the next light (1/2 mile) I experienced the same hesitation (sounded as if the engine was not getting fuel). I pulled into a parking lot to inspect... The engine was not hot by any means. the idle was fine (nothing rough here that would indicate a valve problem etc.) The bus started right up and idled just fine. It carried me the remaining 50 miles or so to home but as I neared home the idle became worse. I arrived at home with the gas gauge in the lower 1/3 of the reserve (figured if it was a clogged filter this would be the time to run it as close to empty as I could). I am assuming that as the gas level decreased there was more debris being directed toward the filter, hence the worsening idle. I let the bus sit for about an hour upon arrival (still no overly hot engine)and then started it up. The idle had returned to normal. Is there anything else that I should be looking for here aside from a dirty filter? Like I said before the problem only seemed to occur when I would get off the gas. There were no accompanying problems typically associated with an engine on the way to failure (over heating, loss of power etc.) so I am hoping a new filter will do the trick. Please let me know if anybody has experienced similar or if I should look into other things.
Sorry for the long post!
Thanks,
Dale |

Dale, by no means am I a type4 engine guy, but hangin at the VW repair shop and watching a type4 fuel system repair try this, first look at the line to see if maby there are 2 filters, alot of guys will put a filter up close to the tank and another after the pump as the case in the repair I watched fuel filter 1 was clogged. Also check the punp, pull the coil wire get someone to turn the engine over and see how well the fuel comes out of the line (it should shoot out not dribble)if you get this far and everything checks out then it's injection system fouled, replace w/ aftermarket carb it's cheaper than injector work and parts.
