Converting to an IRS Bus Transaxle
Why Convert?
There are a couple good reasons...
1. Strength. They are a lot tougher (stock and built) than even a beefed T1 is for offroading.
2. Gearing. The bus transaxle has gear ratios that are much better for offroading than T1's do.
Mounting Styles
10-Degree Mount
This mounting kit tilts the engine and transaxle up 10 degrees for better ground clearance, and also allows you to run the shift rod in the same location as the T1 transaxle. It requires clearancing the frame horns as well as drilling holes into the bellhousing.

Solid/Strap Mount
This is the most common mounting kit used. It's cheap, simple to install, but IMO it's not the best way to do it. However, there's nothing wrong with it, and it works fine on plenty of buggies and bajas. This mount does not put the shift rod in the tunnel, so you must make provisions for this. You can either raise the shifter of get an adapter made to put the shift rod back down in the tunnel. Also, sometimes the bellhousing strap will have to be tweaked to fit around the starter boss. You'll see what I'm talking about if you use this kit.
There is also a piece in the kit that bolts to the transaxle mount studs on the torsion housing and to the nose cone of the tranny, but I can't find any pics of it right now.
Bellhousing Mount
There are several different bellhousing mounts available. I know Kartek carries several different styles, and it would even be possible to fabricate your own pretty easily. You must have a roll cage to use this mount. This isn't an issue in a rail, but you will run into problems if you try to use this mount on a baja without a full rollcage in the rear.
Mid-Mount
There are two different types of mid-mounts, and they are available for both stock frame horns and tubular frame horns, You must add tabs to the frame horns to bolt this mount to if you use it.
The first style bolts in between the intermediate housing and the main case of the transaxle. You must get the transaxle housing machined to be able to use this mount.

The second style slips over the intermediate housing and attaches to the transaxle case studs. You may have to install longer studs in your case to use this mount, but you should discuss this with the vendor you buy it from, since I don't have that information at this time.

Misc Mounts
These are some various other mounts I found pics of. I don't really have any info on them, but they may give you ideas for some mounts you can make yourself...
When you convert to a bus transaxle, you must also change a few other things, such as your axles, CV's,stubs, and possibly the trailing arms. I will cover this briefly in another post, but since that is really a suspension issue, I won't go into much detail.

McKenzies, Kartek, and I'm sure there's another company that sells them (IIRC Fat Performance has one listed in their catalogue).

Hopefully since a lot of the material is written here already, I can put the thread there together a little better than the one here. Also, I may be using some of the info you guys posted here in the other thread, but I will give everyone credit for what they posted here. If you don't want me to use the info you posted in this thread, just pm me and I will leave it out.
Oh yeah, while I'm thinking about it, there is also a Transaxle forum on shoptalkforums that would be good to check out for more info that isn't in my thread here. I personally learned a lot from the henryhoehandle's (the moderator of the transaxle forum) website when I first got into VWs.

basically i think the 091 is used in aircooled 2 litres with the cu engine -up to 1982, there they went wasser
-note in this list, all upto 1982 -aircooled boxes have 2 digit codes
-all later wassers have 3 digits

I intend on fitting a 091 in a splitty, as you get
1. stronger box
2, better ratio's
3, 100mm output flanges
4, option of 40 percent lsd -if you can find one
5, option of using the wasser boxers forged 228mm flywheel
6 -the 228mm clutch with increased clamping pressure
7, the option of hydraulic operation
8, a hundred pounds -ie the cost of the 091 - for a split bus nose cone
-also thereis a cut of date, in t25's where every flywheel after said date is always forged
-so ideal if you use bay or 944 rear suspension and a 2 litre type 4 in a sllit screen -PLUS i bet you could build the box, to gear it-so that its ration are faster than a 901 5 speeder

just to add a bit, i trimmed my bell housing strap to fit around the starter boss. and as far as the piece that bolts to the nose cone, i modified mine to to bolt up to the torsion housing like a stock bug nose cone mount. _________________ OGST | CU05 | OGJHC

why no one hasn't cast the tail/nose cone so the shifter is lower, for the use in beetles - stock - i'll never know?
-surely you just drill , cut off existing, and weld in new local?
-cos of ccccccccourse, thems boxes although alloy, would have a lesser mag content than type 1 - easier to weld
-and you would never have to worry about exploding grinding discs, when clearancing ever again

i think you need to take note that, the 228mm clutched flywheels have the ring gear in a different location than the 210
-this in turn would suggest that the 5/6mm longer pinion starter motors, 'should' only work in these casting?
maybe there is 5/6mm extra meat in the starter mount location, pushing the starter gear 5/6mm away from the engine, and the pinion kind of still being in the correct place -ie not sticking out of the gearbox mounting face, making the engine not sit flush

bug trans -the late irs, has only one removable side plate
-the earlier ones can be fitted with swing axle diffs
-ie it is possible to use an 'AT' code irs box -swing axle
- i think generally, the crownwheels are 31 -1600, 33- 1500 35 -1300
-and the pinions are pitched to suit the tooth count, as they are all 8 teeth
--ie, if you do change diffs from a 1300 swing axle into an irs box, you must use its crownwheel too - else they don't fit back together - even if you belt tham with a lump hammer

They have it is available to use a type 1 nose cone on a bus box
