keep prepping the double door for blasting. so i keep going through the layers of history and past "restorations" so by removing this........

the previous restorer was very competent note the use of galvanised materials to prevent any future corrosion. you would imagine the vw engineers that did the design really blew it missing this option

At least they didn't want the rust comming back Laughing I found plastic wrap and caulking under the steel sheets that were pop-riveted to the floor of my bus. I think some people figure if they sandwich crap between enough layers of goop and undercoating, that its a good solid repair... Razz

What's really funny is when you read autobody forums like Hotrodders.com and the "experts" recommend gluing new panels on with auto adhesive like the new car manufactures do. Why would a new car manufacture want to do anything that would make the car last more than 10-15 years? Yes, thats what I was thinking too.... Rolling Eyes

looks like there is/was more fibreglass in your bus then you would see on the average canoe!

have you come across any concerte in the bus- that is another popular way to "fix" rust- ditto with 300 gallons of oil sprayed underneath the bus on top of the rust- that is a real joy to try and clean off!

Wow, that looks like a nightmare. Is it worth it? Is it the 57 DD in your gallery?

My whole cargo floor was covered with roofing tar and then a sheet (or two) of 3/4" plywood (screwed down every 6" with machine screws). It did preserve the OG paint on the floor, but I screwed it more trying to get all the gunk out. Now I got holes and dents EVERYWHERE.

i bought it for a fun project and i can already feel the waves of relaxing enjoyment coming. yes it is the same bus as in my webshots. i just hand stripped about 8 real layers of paint and two layers of graphiti. seeing as i bought this bus for less than a set of webers i got no worries. besides it is all uphill from here

To speed up the process use a 7 in grinder (cheapie harbor frieght one) with a 36 grit disk or......my all time favorite, propane torch and a 4" scraper. Just heat the bondo, don't burn it, and it will sluff off with the scraper much easier. Shhh

I love dealing with previous repairs, i used to have a collection at the last bodyshop i worked for. Items like: tin foil, drywall tape, screen door, chicken wire, newspaper, expandable spray foam, cardboard, duct tape,
plywood, plexiglass, fiberglass and layers upon layers of plastic filler, it just cracks me up what people will use to make a repair.

Some repairs were downrite scary, people fixing wadded up quarter panels with chicken wire and bondo Shocked
