Are the T-Handles on a <-63 and earlier bus the same as the ones that came on the Oval and Split window beetles?

So far as I know...they're different.
Is it true that KYB Gas-a-Just shocks are better on buses than the GR-2s?

the handles (assemblies) are different from bug to bus. the bus handles are also different for barndoor, 55-60(ish), and 61-63.
i prefer the ride of gas-a-just over gr-2, but that's just me.
is it fact or fiction that ambulance fans are over-rated and overpriced because they don't really do anything except blow minimal air over the top of your head, and that Uni-Vents are much better because you can direct the air on you rather than over you? _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

Hmm. I have always run KYB shocks. Bilstein would be the correct ones actually! _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Ah, but I wasn't looking for correct ones...I just want to find the ones that will give my camper a more stable ride. And yes, I know that having 6 or 8 ply tires definitely help, too.

I would guess the gas adjust are better as I think they are a heavier duty shock. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

That's what I've heard, but I also wanted to check and see what other people use. Are the KYBs a bit easier to find, as well?

BOGE or F&S shocks for me. if it ain't got a portioning valve that is like 30/70 or 40/60, I won't run it.
the univents are way cooler than ambulance fans. I have used both and I would take the univents any day of the week. (and the ambulance fans on my sunday driver.) univents are rarer and harder to find, but way cheaper. I got my NOS set for $100 on ebay a couple years ago. try finding NOS ambulance fans for that. |

KYB's are pretty easy to find. I'm sure VA has them if not Buggy House does.
I painted my rears grey to boot!
I would like to try the boge or Bilsteins but I think they are pretty expensive. Lind? _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Those univents are what I think they were. I ran my bus for a short while without the vent plate on there at all. Can't believe how much air that thing passed!

Busdepot used to be the cheapest for KYB's but the last set I got was actually cheaper getting it from the local Napa house since I didn't have to pay shipping. The last recommendation I saw was for GR-2's on the front and Gas-A-Just's on the rear due to the added weight back there. I did that on my bay Westy and it rides and handles great. The Bridgestone RD-603 14" tires helped a bunch too. _________________ ~~~~~~~~

Neat. Are those Bridgestones a reinforced sidewall tire?

They're 8-ply rated, 185R14's, and the new number is 603V. They're available in Load Range C (1600 lbs) or D (1850 lbs) from tirerack.com. I got 'em about a year and a half ago from the local Winston outlet, who is now belly-up. If you look 'em up by vehicle on tirerack, use '82 Vanagon.
Tirerack also has the Yoko Y356's which get good press, but I haven't tried them. _________________ ~~~~~~~~

Those sound like sweet tires! What did they cost you for a set?

Sorry, actually went and took the time to look it up myself.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=603V
Looks like $380 for 5 tires and about $44 is the cheapest shipping to my neck of the woods.
Pretty cool!

No white walls I paid about $85/each installed last year in Sacramento, tirerack has the 603V for $75 and the Yoko's are around $60. (+ shipping) and then + local installation. Call your favorite tire store and see if they can get them. Bridgestone=Firestone but almost everybody else should be able to order them too. _________________ ~~~~~~~~

I know a lot of people like the gas shocks on their bus, but I have to admit, I swapped out my gas shocks for some oil filled Cofaps, and (to me) the ride is so much more comfortable. They're valved something like 70/30. I like a smooth cushony ride myself. Too many out of state trips each year to go for the firm ride. _________________ Eric Allred
