Hi,

I have a 1958 model big window RHD Standard beetle and the body number is 19 133 which, according to all the lists I've found, leads me to believe the body was built in July 1957 and assembled with the chassis in August, when the new big window model was released.

The last body made in July 1957 is listed everywhere as 23 794 (I assume this was an oval?) so were oval and big window shells coming off the line at the same time, with the new model put to one side unill the next month?

The birth certificate says it was built on August 19th 1957, It left Wolfsburg on August 22nd. It was registered on 6th September 1957 in Hertfordshire UK.

Does anyone else on here own, or know of, an August '57 Big widow bug with an early body number or is this something odd? Confused

Any ideas or facts? Confused

So, out of 73,187 registered users no one has a late '57 oval or early '58 model with a body number around 23 794! Confused

The windows got bigger with chassis #1 600 440... #23 794 was on chassis# 1 600 846. This "last" unit could be a Ghia or Vert.

What is your Chassis# (if its original?) Confused

The Beetles (excluding cabs) built for the US and Canadian markets were assigned chassis numbers in blocks of around 1,000-2,000 consecutive numbers for the entire Wolfsburg/Emden production run (Frau Neefe can easily confirm this), but it could have taken days or weeks before the last car in a specific block rolled off the assembly line. This may explain some of the inconsistencies in correlating body versus chassis numbers.

Chassis number is 1 625 144 which dates it to 19th August.

I still think the most likley explanation is that VW were producing both oval and big window shells in tandom ready for the change at the end of July.

I'd like to confirm this somehow. Has anyone seen any factory pics from around this time showing both models on the line together?

That makes some sense. There was a change on Aug 16 at Chassis # 1 624 372...something about the crankcase.

I have ALOT of factory photos...none showing both windows together at anytime...and very few are dated. Sad

Here is the only one that is shown as '58, but no idea of the month...

So, if that's all original it an August Chassis with July body too!
(If the body number dates listed are correct?)

I asume its a big window beetle, not an oval?

Yeah . it's a big window too. But it's not all there now. I had to scrap the pan because these A-holes down here used as a hunting bug in central Louisiana (swamp land). I bought it for $100 and restored the body.
It currently sits on a '74 pan.
I did cut the chassis # off the tunnel and am going to make it into a chromed plaque for the dash.

You're probably right, Alot changed on the body at that time, they probably needed a head start with some July bodies...P/R shows when the windows changed with the chassis #, but gives no body number.

Itlives might have one of the first square windows... Cool

Why not find a '58 pan and weld the #'s back in?

Mike, make sure you check out our ongoing thread that I linked below, but here is some quick info on your car.

Your vin# 1774169 looks to have a build date of possibly 11/30, or 12/1 of 57.
Your engine # 2152790 looks to be in the right number sequence, and is more than likly the original one to the car.
Body # looks to be from 11/57, and is located in the correct place.

The best thing to do is to check out this link...
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=398
......and order up a birth cert.
