I just got back from spending a week+ in and around Coos Bay and the VW bus scene is slim to none up there! I saw a few buses parked here and there but the total lack of any in the wrecking yards was a disappointment.
I am spoiled with the yards here in Fresno, Calif.
I am contemplating moving there, but it would mean the end of good used parts once I run out of my stash here...... |

I have friends in coos bay... they don't drive a bus though.
Beautiful place though... the whole coast up there is pretty amazing. _________________ '71 Westy

Oh yeah! Eugene, Oregon is the next best thing to a true Californian VW bus. The last I was down there, they were all over town. Campers, trucks, panels, kombis, etc. I was recently in central California- bay area- and saw a grand total of 4 bugs and only 1 bus! I was very dissapointed after being there for 4 days. I went into Oakland, San Francisco, and only 1! I'm begining to think that they are starting to trickle up to the NW. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Transporter "Winston"

Karl...we'll welcome you if you move to Oregon. Think about the dry side of the mountain....300 plus days of sun and only 3 hours from the coast! Maupin and the Deschutes River...one of the most famous rivers in the world! Keep us posted! _________________ '71 bug, answers to "Clementine"

What do you mean, "the next best thing"??? We're settin' the trend here these days, Phyllis... or Andrew. You should try checking out the Oregon Country Fair sometime. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Thought about going this year to the fair. It's just so nice going down there and seeing all the buses around town. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Transporter "Winston"

I was hitchhiking from San Francisco to Seattle when I was 18 and got picked up by this lady. I had been up all night and fell asleep in the car. When I woke up, I was alone in a hotel parking lot, in her car. She came out and said she just wanted to take a nap and I could have the hotel room (she paid till the next day and didn't tell me). Two days in Coos Bay. A very beautiful and very boring place. _________________ '77 Sunroof Bus.

And I thought you would be leading up to "I woke up in a tub of ice and was missing a kidney".......
Yes, it is slow and boring..... seems like they roll up the sidewalks when the sun goes down! |

It would probably make for a better story. But that was the most exciting thing that happened. Spent my time walking on the beach and enjoying the goodies I picked up in Eureka. Much better story. I got dropped off in Eureka and saw this guy I had just bought a sack off of in San Francisco. He said he had a proposition for me. He gave me a hotel room and then showed up the next day with food and pounds of goodies. Said I could have whatever I wanted. Just keep it in the hotel room and he'll come by every once in a while and take some. Spent a week there and left with a good amount. Another very boring place but with very nice people. I guess everybody is nice when you ask everyone you see if they smoke. I even tipped the maid with it. _________________ '77 Sunroof Bus.

First of all, it's been a long time since anyone's called me slim. Second, it's been a while since anyone's called the front of my house anything but a wrecking yard. So, thank you. I live in Coos Bay. I've been on the Oregon Coast I think more of my life than any other single place, but can't say Coos Bay is the happenin'-est town. I liked Tillamook better. But the job's here. It's not bad. Eugene is an honest two hours away, but we don't necessarily say that like it's a bad thing. It's got its advantages for parts, etc., of course, but the big city has definitely gotten bigger over the last couple years, and the parts are often pretty rusted. There are two VW repair places here (2nd street Foreign, and "the Germanator"). Both seem pretty nice, and as well-schooled as any. There's a couple other guys around, too. We could use another Bay in town. The biggest VW-related action is the dune-buggy scene. We've got a ton of dunes. But it's mostly taken over by Quads now. (sigh) _________________ Glenn Roesener
