Well, I just sent my infor over the fax. The fax on the other end picked up pretty quick. Don't know what that phone call will cost but for 1 or 2 minutes, shouldn't be much. Thanks also for the information and I'll post back when I get my 'birth certificate'.

I email them this week , and this is what they wrote
Dear Sir or Madam,
We are pleased to research data of your Volkswagen and to draw up a birth certificate with the recorded data regarding original engine, colour, date of manufacture, port of destination...
The price for this service is 35 euros/dollars which you have to pay „cash with order“, please. Our terms of payment are by cash or via Visa/Mastercard – card number and expiry date.
For member countries of the European Union you can also transmit the amount on our bank account:
Volksbank Wolfsburg
BIC: G E N O D E F 1 W O B
IBAN: DE32 2699 1066 0811 8400 00
Do not forget to inform us about the chassis number of your vehicle and the engine number. Because of data protection we are not allowed to inform you about the original engine number. However, we are able to proof if the engine number you will give us correspond to the chassis number of your vehicle.
Please inform us about the name of the vehicles‘ owner and the complete address where we should send the certificate to, please.
We need approximately six to eight weeks for the research.
We are looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Christine Neefe

I cut and paste a letter in the form described above with my information and forwarded it via their website contact email. I could not find an english tab on the website so I used a German to English web page translation to determine what each required field was. |

Well folks,
Got my 'birth certificate' in today and haven't looked at the phone bill or the credit card but the form is authentic. Don't know what the M 002 code is except for US-equipment but all else looks in order. When my father bought the Ghia in 1978, it was even original color at that time. Just wanted to post back for anyone interested. Everyone enjoy your Ghia's. _________________ 1968 Blue coupe

I received a birth certificate last week and the engine number stated "is not available". I followed up with an email and was notified they no longer provide the engine number in accordance with a newly instituted policy. Very dissapointing. |

I got the info from VW many years ago when the service was still free. I wonder why the engine number is no longer given? I have the original engine number for my Karmann Ghia, sadly the original engine is no longer in my car.

Why? Did you sell the original engine of your Karmann Ghia? What happened? _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

When I purchased the car in 1992 the original engine was not in the car, so at some point it was swapped out for another engine. God only knows where the original engine is.

You should be able to get one for any vintage VW. I was lucky enough to order mine back in '99 or so thanks to reading about it on the rec.autos.makers.vw.aircooled newsgroup, so I got all the info I wanted - for free and on VW letterhead - except for the paint code. _________________ 1967 KG Coupe, Castilian Yellow, aka "Katie". Did anyone else on their country of destination have on it :
"USA, tourists"
That is what I got on mine and I am not sure what it means. I am guessing maybe that American tourists were in Germany and purchased it there and sent it over themselves? _________________ It is mine....the divorce papers say so....

VW had a tourist delivery program from the 50's on. One could order a specific vehicle from one's local dealer, and a German dealer (or later, the VW tourist delivery depot in Wolfsburg, or at the Frankfurt a.M. airport) would prepare the car for pickup, with customs license plates, temporary paperwork and tourist car insurance. The tourist would then have the opportunity to drive the car around Europe, and return the vehicle to a predetermined shipping-off location on an agreed-upon date. Then fly home, then after a month or two, pick up the vehicle either at the port or the local dealer.
A couple of the old VW's I've owned were delivered Stateside via this scheme. Both of them racked up thousands of miles touring Europe before they were shipped over. _________________ David Ruby

I faxed them these details already but they asked for them again for some reason?
It took about 9 weeks and around the 6 week mark they withdrew the funds from my account.
Try emailing - Roswitha Hendel

They replied to every question I asked.
Hope this helps |

Thanks for that.
I'm sure I did all they requested, in fact I copied and pasted Coad's sample email, filling all the required data.
I'll give it a couple of days until after the Christmas festivities and email an enquiry. _________________ John.
