Got my new 2.2 from Wolfsberg put in today, check it out:
So far I've driven it 50 miles and it's nice and smooth. I don't notice much difference over a well-tuned 2.1 but they say it will wake up after a couple thousand miles and that's in line with other engines I've broken in. I am pretty stoked. Except, uh, it was-- ah-- expensive. $4500 installed. (And their prices are going up). Plus miscellaneous crap. Yowch!
But... it is a quality rebuild with quality parts (AMC heads + OEM valves) and a 3-year warranty. If that's what you want you gotta pay for it. And the shop is awesome. They build the engines there. I kinda like that they painted it too, helps to see leaks and muck better should they be planning a surprise attack. _________________ Tennessee Sombrero

My GoWesty 2.2 first gained some power around 700 miles...then a little more around 1,500 and somewhere around 2,000 it broke the sound barrier (the one in my head at least). $ 4,500 is cheap compared to GoWesty. I won't get into any debates about which one is better or will last longer (mine of course) but $ 4,500 for a quality rebuild and installation is a good deal.
Good luck..... |

So is Wolfsberg using the GW/Wiseco P&L set? Or something of their own? |

Congratulations, for real. My 2.1 GoWesty replacement for my old 1.9 shipped at the end of last week - should be arriving any time now. I can barely contain myself. _________________ 98 B5 A4 1.8t Quattro

It's a local Seattle shop with a great reputation around town. http://www.wolfsburgmotorwerksinc.com
Good to know if you're traveling through. Very helpful guys there.

That is a sobering sum. At this point, though, the vans are getting old to the point of them needing to be refurbished. Not restored, yet. Restoration is even more expensive. I am glad we can buy new parts, especially things like the upgraded custom heads. What a life saver those are. Since the heads, like any other limited market item, is basically custom made, you have to pay for that. I am glad the knowledge about these cars is still out there to be bought when needed.
Now heed my words. It will only get "worse" for us. More and more important parts will get harder and harder to come by and buy (sic.) I know this cycle very well. Between 10 and 20 or so years old we can get parts. After that it gets harder and harder. Witness mid 80's coolant hoses. What a pain to get new ones. Please know I am VERY familiar with this cycle.
Also, be very happy the knowledge is out there. I am no Vanagon expert. But, I am a Mercedes 190SL expert. Those cars are 50 years old. More than twice our Vanagons. Most parts you buy are reproductions and, thankfully, we can get a lot. But, important parts like brake boosters, cylinder haads, carbs can basically only be gotten used or rebuilt. And they are DAMN expensive. Those parts cost in the thou$ands.
The knowledge for the older cars dries up too. Machine shops don't know what to do. You have to find the ones that still do know what to do. Be prepared to pay more.
Now I don't want this to become rantish, but, you have to face the fact that even these Vanagons, the last of the rear end powered VWs are getting OLD. Eventually we all be glad when some one reproduces a certain key part, almost no matter what the cost.
It is a well known cycle. I am glad I do not have repair, fix or weld too many parts on my van as I can just go and buy new ones. That's good for now.

Quite right, Walt. The dimishing availability of parts is just the inevitable reaction to a shrinking market. The one thing different today is the existence of the internet and places like Samba, where knowledge can be pooled. That lessens the likelihood of the total loss of expertise that is unique to a particular old car type as the few who know about it used to fade into obscurity. Having the ability to share their know-how freely to a dispersed audience keeps the knowledge alive as long as there are others who seek it. That much is already clear.
As to the parts supply, I foresee, as the market shrinks, fewer and fewer houses that will offer parts that are exclusive to a particular model, but the remaining buyers will flock to the final holdouts due to the ability to share the knowledge among the community as to which retailers still offer parts. Those holdout retailers will, in the end, have to make exclusive arrangements with manufacturers to produce runs of some of those rarer and rarer items, but individually they may be able to place orders for a sufficient number to justify the production run because they know they have a large slice of the remaining market.
But eventually, as the cars are lost to rust and collisions, there will just be too few buyers to support any level of replacement manufacturing, the remaining usable used parts will be swapped around the community, until the cars themselves become an obscure collectors item. But having the ability to pool knowledge and buying power via the internet will enable this process to be drawn out over a longer time than it would have taken formerly.

You know what's funny? Parts for my 18-and-a-half year-old van are WAY easier to get than parts for my three year-old eye-talian motorbikes. I waited 3 months this year for a stator and 10 months for a sprocket. So relax and enjoy the good times! _________________ Tennessee Sombrero
