Evil or Very MadI am having trouble installing my newly rebuilt engine in my 74 thing. It wouldn't go all the way in. first I had to take the vacuume advance thing off the dizzy and remove the pully belt . I got the bottom studs in the trany holes but I could only get the engine to go in about a inch. I tried turning the bottom pully to get the splines matched. still no go. after about a hour and a bad back I gave up. Sad whats the secret to doing this?. I have installed my 68 and 65 bus engines many times, only a 15 minute job. but This sucks.

When you installed the clutch, did you use the centering tool with splines to ensure the clutch is centered on the crank? Are you sure the tranny is the one that belongs on the Thing? That is my two cents

I have centering tool but it doesn't have splines. this is the same tool I have been using for my other engines.. it's the same engine that was in there before. I just had it rebuilt. and it is the correct trany..

I to am going to vote for the clutch. It just sounds like that. I would insert the clutch alignment tool again to see if it slides in free. If it does, then that is not the issue.

If it does not, then loosen the bolts on the Pressure Plate, and re-align the disc.

just throwing out ideas here- have you got the right pressure plate and throw out bearing installed? is the starter hung up, and interfering with the flywheel? is the engine lined up and straight?

I would loosen the pressure plate and recenter the clutch.

I have had problems with some engines before also. Even though you have turned the crank, was the car in gear? Maybe the input shaft was turning also if there was pressure on it. Might try putting the car in gear and set the emergency brake then turn the crank before you pull it back out and reset the clutch.
