Thinking of having a 2275 built as a street performance motor for my Ghia. I was told the 48's would give problems due to not having "progression" but they could be modified. I like the old school Cal Look of the 48's. What do you suggest? Go with the 48's or go with the 44's and have better street performance without the hassle of modifying the 48's? Thanks! |

I'm also in the process of putting together a 2276 for my 74 Beetle. I have a pair of IDAs that were rebuilt by Art Thraen and had the 3rd progression holes added. I will be using them on this engine. _________________ Glenn

How about 48 IDFs instead of 48 IDAs?
I run 48 IDA's on the street with just 2 progression holes and have no issues. 3 progression holes will be smoother and yield better fuel economy though... _________________ Richard Sedoris - VW Performance & Machine - Youngstown, OH

If you want IDA's then get IDA's! IDA's in a Ghia look so badass, and don't have the problems you have to deal with in a Beetle. I run IDA's in my street Beetle with the third progression and love them! You will regret having 44's _________________ die schwarzen Schafe #666 |

Any difference between the Italian 48 IDA'a and the new ones being made? |

Art is good, but there are plenty of others out there who can "go over" your carbs.
The new IDA's from all reports seem to perform just as well as the old ones. The finish color of the pot metal is lighter on the new ones. They use screws instead of studs with nuts. The accel pump squiters are press-in rather than screw in for the Italian ones.
The difference is subtle, yet noticeable to the naked eye. It's more of a personal preference for the die hard Cal-Look who wants Italian only.
Otherwise, they are all excellent carbs to run.
IDA's can be made to work extreemly well on a street car.
With all the Race performace you expect. They are easy to tune and work on. They last a very long time between re-builds. They last forever if taken care of.
Common modifications include:
-Addition of 3rd progression hole
-Installation of 3.0mm needle/seats to aid fuel recovery on 200hp+ motors.
-Enlarge fuel inlet port size and remove small fliter screen to improve fuel flow.
-Open addtional side channel to bowl volume. (adds about 2cc's of fuel to bowl.)
-Re-jet idle to 60-65 range.
-Install 40, 42, or 44mm venturis
-Re-jet mains to match venturi/motor combo.
-Triple check the float settings. This is ever-so-critical on IDA's for some reason. It must be dead nuts. |

YEa..definitely do IDAs. Bore them to 51.5mm and really kick some ass.
Venturis are everywhere. Stock bored ones or billet ones. I have made a few in the past.
The IDAs are the way to go. Just choke them down some. |

Another vote for IDAs. Drilling that third progression hole will help transition and cruising greatly.
Had them for a few years on my 2110 when I went to Electronics school.
There was cement quarry on the way to school and the dust genrated there would always make me shiver for my piston rings everyday I would pass through there. I was not running filters on my beetle.
Lesson: If you are going to run 48IDAs as beautiful as they are unfiltered, get some filters on them. your bottom end will thank you for it.
Air filters should not be a problem on a Ghia though. |
