Alternator/External reg (AL78X)
TO
Alternator/Internal reg (AL82N)

I know that this has probably been beat to death, but all the different links and how-to's vary slightly. I think I know what I am going to be doing I just need a confirmation that my head isn't mixed-up and I'm totally backwards.

1. Connect Battery lead to Alternator B+ (this is pretty straight forward and consistant in all the instructins)

2. Pull the D+ lead (which is a red wire with a blue wire pig-tail, warning light in the instrument cluster) from the external regulator and put a connector on it and run it to the D+ terminal on the alternator.

Is there anything I'm missing?

Thanks a bunch

Jason

I saw that diagram.

By that diagram I think I'm on the right track. On the diagram they say green wire to blue wire. The Blue wire is spliced in with red wire correct?

So this would actually be D+ (red and blue on one connector) and DF spliced together and connected to D+ on the alternator?

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/74-up113wiring.jpg
I'm assuming the green wire is DF from the above diagram

What I find confusing about the simple diagram is the reference to the green wire. All other instrustions I have refer only to D+.

Thanks

Jaymonkey,
You've nailed it. On a Gennie, Green is D+ and this wire is spliced into the blue idiot light feed when you change to an Int Reg Alt.

On a Ext Reg Alt, Red is D+ and has the idiot light spliced off it.

So you say you have tossed the Ext Reg Alt for an Int Reg Alt, then D+ (Red) is the sole wire that needs to be connected and so long is you have a seamless connection all the way up to the idiot light from your D+ wire you are home and hosed. Your heavy B+ stays as is.

Ok,

And the rest of the wires going into the external reg can just be discarded?

Thanks a bunch. My head hurts from trying to make sense of it. You shed some serious light on the situation. Thanks Volkenstein

Jaymonkey,
Tape them up and put them out of harms way. Then donate the Ext Reg Alt to a charity, namely me Laughing .

Enjoy

I didnt have to splice any of the wires giong to my regulator when I went from an externally to internally regulated alternator this weekend. My warning light appears to work properly. The Bentley didnt mention anything about splicing in it's blurb on this change. Did I do it right?

Focuszx3r,
On an Ext Reg Alt wiring, the red D+ to idiot light connection is already made. "Spliced" was perhaps the wrong adjective!!

You shouldn't have any problems.

When you change a gennie over you have to make the connection between the green and blue wires yourself.

Converting from an AL78X (3 Prong Connector) to AL82...don't splice anything! It's very very simple.

Remove regulator from underneath rear seat. Done, no more messing around back there.

Heavy gauge wire (red/white) goes to the ring terminal on new alternator. Cut the green/brown wires at the insulation tubing, you will not need these anymore. The small gauge red wire goes to the spade terminal on new alternator.

DONE!

Should look similar to this when your done:

The installation was pretty simple. To many directions. Seems to be working well.

Actually. I have an issue. I have a "whirring" sound coming from the cooling fan. Anyone encounter this?
