This genuine space geek is just shaking her head and laughing at all you nuts.
By the way, that's Mars you're cruising past, not the Moon.
Tsk tsk tsk.
And the "space shuttle" Vanagon ad is from the late-April 1981 issue of National Geographic that covered the first flight of Columbia (STS-1, April 12-14 1981).
... "Buran" is the name of the Soviet copy of the US shuttle; it flew all of once before all funding was cut. |

FYI: Buran is visible rusting away in a disused space shuttle parking lot at the Baikonur Cosmodrome if you check it out using Google Earth. It's slightly north and east of one of the main vehicle assembly buildings. (This building looks badly damaged in the satellite photos on Google Earth. Did they have a fire?) _________________ HerrBGone

Dave,
The hangar that stored an Energia booster and various parts of spacecraft suffered a roof collapse. A number of workers were on the roof at the time and inside the building, and there were fatalities:
SPACE.com -- Six Dead So Far in Baikonur Cosmodrome Hangar Roof Collapse (later went up to eight ... edited, why did that become a smiley?).
Pictures of the mess:
Последние фотографии Бурана (no need to be able to read Russian, which I can't, to understand the photos). |

Oh man! No wonder the program was canceled. If I’m reading the second picture of the wreckage correctly, the orbiter was obliterated! Doing some more research last night I found out that it’s actually a prototype orbiter that can be seen on Google Earth.
Edit: Ah… It’s a ‘full size test model’ of Buran crushed in the wreckage. Note to self: Read the linked article – then post! _________________ HerrBGone

If you want to know more probably than you ever really wanted to know, here's the link I give people who want to know about the name:
