Leave it an open diff unless you want your girlfriend to crash. A car that has welded spiders, spool, or limited slip is not as safe in the rain. Plus many, many people drag race with an open diff and they do very well.

Yeah, I have read the same thing about welding spools = crash!

I remember reading something over at Geneberg.com, called Poor Mans Posi. Can't remember, I think it was something like you were saying, shimming or something to partially preload the spider gears a little?? Beyond my tech skill/comprehension a bit,.. BUT Gene Berg knows his stuff I think. Check it out.

The Berg poor mans posi is just shims that tighten up the diff and cause premature wear. Welding spider gears is dangerous and should never be done. You can get a used ZF limited slip, but their not cheap.

You have to realize that there is a difference between a "posi" diff and one that utilizes a spool. A posi differential will lock up ONLY when one tire begins to spin. The rest of the time, it acts as an open diff. You don't have that benifit with a spool. As far as welding the spider gears, I would never do that simply because if the weld ever fails, you could end up with a chuck of metal bouncing around inside the transaxle case . . . and who wants that. Welding gears is never a good idea.

The Poorman's posi shims will tighten the side gears to the spiders by taking the clearance away. Yea, it will give you the "posi" effect a little.

The wear is not really there since the open diff will only work the spiders when you loose traction on one wheel. This is when it spins the spiders over the side gears. But so long as both wheels track at the same, the spiders stay put and the both axles roll as a unit.

All it is sticking the correct thickness shim in there between the "C" clip and side gear.

YOu need the whole tranny? or just the shim pack? Get some from GeneBerg Ent. The shims are not that expensive.

Ok if you wanna beat some ricers then build a stroker instead of a weenie 1835cc. Im not saying 1835cc are crap im just saying you get more power out of a stroker for probably less money.

My '69 is not Posi, yet most of the time both tires spin when I launch.

The average VW Posi is around $1000, you'll have to decide if it's really worth it.

I'm developing a new Posi unit for the ACVW that should be much cheaper than the currently avalible units(without sacraficing quality). Gimmie about 8 months though, I have a bit of work to do still.

I have used the poor man posi since the late 60s on a bunch of cars from bajas to Myers’s Manx 10sec car with great results. Also on a bug with a hot rod 912 engine that was driven 20,000 miles and had very little wear. In some cases it worked better than a posi. I wouldn’t hesitate to use one again.

If your going to do a "Lincoln Locker" at least do it the right, Use a TIG welder and Silicon Bronze wire.
