I have to adjust the valves on my 77 Westy today, but I have to go out first (plus I want to give the ground a chance to dry up a tad).

How long after driving do you think it's safe to adjust the valves? I know they should be done on a cold engine.

Thanks!

It should take to long for it to get cold there today I would guess.

I would give it an hour or so. How is the pug today?

Rob,

The engine should be cold. Maybe give it a few hours.

I usually back my car into my garage, but when i'm going to adjust the valves, i pull it in head first. That way the first thing the next morning i go in and it only takes 15 minutes.

Today's going to be one of the last nice days for a while.

I miss having a dog. I also miss 60 degrees. Rain/freezing rain today here at the beach. Sad

I also like them dead cold when adjusting valves but have done them when it was warm <100 (although never hot) with no problems. When i used to do it with an oil change I would always do the valves first and then start it up until the oil got warm enough to change.

2 questions:

1) Mr. B: Does "the breeze" come from the JJ Cale song, "they call me the breeze'?
2) Glenn: How did you get such a collection of dizzies? Impressive.

I rebuild old Bosch centrifical distributors and am always looking for good cores. I specialize on 010 and 019's, but have done a few old ones for Volvos.

You want impressive... check this out.

It sure does.

It was my cb handle back in the day. I'm on the road a lot for work, so a buddy gave me that name....always "Blowin' down the road"

The book says it's ok as long as the oil temperature has dropped below 122F. Personally I would wait until tomorrow. When you turn the engine off, heat soak kicks in and it rises before it falls. I know an hour is long enough in summer for sure but during winter where you are maybe.

Glenn,

The dizzy out of my 72 was rebuilt by Philbin but does not work right. Would you be willing to give it a try?

I only do centrifical distributors. I don't have a source for replacement parts for vacuum advance.

OK, I waited a few hours and it was definitely cold. But, a problem.

Exhaust valve on #2 was just a LITTLE tight and I couldn't adjust it. I took the screw completely out and it didn't make a difference. What am I looking at?

FYI, I had a tight valve on #1, #3 & #4 also. I'm adjusting these things every 3,000 and that seems to be the case usually. The engine has about 30,000 on it since rebuild.
