How do I tell the difference between type 3 and 1 backing plates. I just got some brakes from my brother and I'd swear the b-plates look exactly like type 1's. The drums are type three. Could he have been using type 1 plates? Any help appreciated. Clint

The type 3 plates are dished out towards the back to allow the drum to sit closer to the rear arms. It should only have 4 holes to mount it though. That is my way of f ing things up.... Hope this helps

Type 3 rear drums are slightly bigger diameter than Type 1, at 248x46mm, compared to 230x40mm. Given the 18mm difference, I don't think Type1/3 backing plates are interchangable.

I'm not sure about the front drums.
