this message was sent to me via the type 2 mailing list, if anyone can help out, please do!

Kyle is heading to NC
He is in walterboro, SC , he is at the Waffle House off 95 near mile
53. He
called me from a payphone and said he would try and stay near. His
number
at that pay phone is 843 538 3914

He Has a 79 Automatic that is pouring tranny fluid between engine and
tranny. It is red fluid so is tranny fluid.

Needs a gasket and a place to work. Or if ya just want to try and
help.

He has never attempted an engine drop and doesn't have many tools. If
any
one could help him out or point him in right direction. Give him a
call. I
got this call at 3:15 PM Sun.

I told him if he gets better contact info or needs more help to give me
a
call.

please, if anyone can help, it would be great.

I just got an update from Kyle.
They ended up getting a hotel room at the Friendly Motor Inn Room #17

They haven't been able to figure out which part they need so if you
have any
knowledge of a 79 automatic they could sure use it.

The recap:
79 Automatic Westy in Walterboro, SC need to get to NC.

Tranny is pouring tranny fluid and now if they start it it sounds like
grinding rocks.

The parts houses around there keep asking them about a sleeve???

Please help if ya can... Even if it is just to talk with them to try
and
figure out what they need to get.

here is an e-mail from the person himself, begging for assistance!

I am stranded in Waltersboro, SC. My tranny has leaked all of its
fluid. The
bus felt almost like it was stuck in neutral. So we pulled over. Tranny
fluid smokin off the engine. Looked underneath and watched a stream of
tranny fluid pour out from the bottom of the final drive from behind
the
torque converter.

Tried adding fluid and it didn't drain, but as soon as I started the
bus I
could watch it pour out. Now if I start the bus there is a loud
crunching
noise that immediately starts. So I don't start the bus.

I figure the converter seal is probably bad. Maybe the converter
bushing
went bad and caused the seal to go bad. Could that cause the noise?

I really need any help? Never dropped an engine. Not sure what special
tools
I need. Very low on $.
Willing to try anything. Found access to parts, but no address to ship
them
to.

Need place to work on bus. Any help or advice is much appreciatted.

This is a 79 w/ an auto tranny.

We are staying at the friendly inn in waltersborough, SC

The room is under Kyle LaFerriere. Not sure what room # right now cause
we
had to switch. Please call or stop by.

Thanks.

will someone please help a fellow volkswagen enthusiast out! it is not a joke, this is serious! please help!

Wish I could help... I'm in LA, so I'm on the other side of the continent. Cruching, draining sounds like it's time for a complete swap of the tranny. Just about anything can be rebuilt but it would almost be easier to just swap it. did you see anything on the classified forum? have you checked the shop talk forum? I know there are people on that site that may live close to you.

good luck to you.

I just sent an email to you including people in the area that may be able to help. In case you don't get the email go to www.type2.com.

They have a link called "Airs" it is a group that helps out other VW people stuck on the road. I included everyone listed from SC. All you have to do is check out the map link and click on the state.

Hope somebody from this listing can help out your buddy.

Glad to help. I know how it is to be stuck on the side of the road or in a rest stop with half my engine on the floor scratching my head wondering what is wrong. I also know how it is to have someone come by and help out.

Hope your buddy is able to find someone on the list that can help, or at least store the bus until he can get back to haul it home.

Wink
