Yes I searched. Searching for "Backspacing" got me 12 hits. I read each, including the links inside each thread. I read Ratwells FAQ. I posted in the tire thread, and got no response. I googled it. I still have questions.
First off. I'm replacing the wheels on the bus, mainly because I need tires, and I want to upgrade to a 15" wheel so I have more options. I like the look of the stock chrome five lug wheel (pictured below, photo courtesy of the samba gallery) but it was mentioned that I might not be able to use it for bus applications due to weight issues. Any truth to that?
If I use those (or even if I didn't), how wide a wheel can go in the rear with which tire?
Lastly, what backspacing is needed for the rear, so I don't hit the fenderwell? I know the stock BS is 39 for a bus, but it looks like several aftermarket wheels are 35mm. Is this a problem?
Basically just trying to see what fits. Thanks for any help at all. _________________ '73 Transporter - Driver

you can use late bay spring plates with vanagon axle stubs and drums (or something similar) to bring the rear hubs inboard about 1 1/2". this will allow you to run an 8" wide tire easily inside the fenderwell. it'd make your rears the 5x112 lug pattern though.
i have a short writeup on this procedure at home if you're interested and need more accurate info. _________________ "And then before the sentence was over, you threw a `fuckin' in there to emphasize your irritatedness." ~ Shanna
