Would you rather put a Bergmann or a Crate 1600 DP in your ride.

Has anyone had a Bergmann? Was it/is it a good experience?

Thanks ahead, Todd

Everytime I have ever called Bernie Bergmann, I have gotten nothing but rude feedback from the other end. Me personally, I wouldn't give that guy a penny of my money. Maybe others were grateful enough to have a positive experience with this guy.

I definitly wouldn't go with a Bergmann motor (do a search here and on STF to find out why), and we don't know who makes the "crate" motor that you speak of.

Any more info on the crate motor for us?

I dont think Bergmann does street motors. At least not what I think of as street. (Stock). He deals with the high end customer and high performance stuff. He has lost touch with his roots so to speak. He is not interested in the small daily driver guy anymore. You know the guys who put hime where he is. Its a shame but I guess he is just following the money. As for a crate engine you will need to do your homework. Stay away from those guys who have the biggest adds in the mags. They are volume dealers and quality suffers a lot. I recomend staying with the old cases, original tim etc. Good luck in your endevor and keep us posted.

To be more specific...
I am tasked with fixing my brothers 71 bus. Just pulled the 1600 DP out of it and was thinking of ordering a new motor from Brazil and bolting it back in. He would like some more HP though for the hills but he's not a gear head by any means. Personally I get hesitant to add bolt-ons because in the end they can cause an imbalance. ex. when you put an .009 Distributor in you pick up a nicer timing curve but this can be detrimental because in turn not being vacuum advanced it will not retard the timing if the motor is ever bogged down. Don't get me wrong I ran one in my bug for years, you just have to be carefull how you drive it under load.

So I'm up for suggestions on this one. His needs are reliability and a little more HP for the hills. I've been out of it for a while so I put this one to you guys. I'm skipping the Bergmann, but would like some more options.

Thanks Todd
